Ryuuk had made it clear that the afterlife was just a fake tale the hopeless had created. Once people died, they became nothing-- there was nothing waiting for them. Near'd been far from surprised at such a discovery, as those had always been his own beliefs.
Things were different now, however. Mello was supposed to be dead - he was supposed to be nothing - but Near was about to meet him again, an occurrence he'd never thought would ever be possible. The thought was frightening, there was no guarantee that the person approaching his house was the blond he used to know, which was the main reason why he'd told Halle to stop whatever she was doing and hurry back. Still, Near was certain that the person he had talked to over the computer was Mello; confirming his resurrection was worth the risk.
Cold eyes staring at the door, Near sat motionless on the floor, waiting. Seconds kept passing in silence.
