Ema really hated the sermons from the Church of Sin. As far as she was concerned, there was nothing the Church could do to convince her to join; Dante's words still stood out in her mind. She had sworn to herself somewhere along the way that wouldn't become someone pawn (the irony of being a Dragon of Earth was completely lost on her), and she would never, never join an organization that once prized Matt Engarde as a member.
No, all the sermons managed to do is keep Ema up at night. Even after hearing her fifth sermon, it disturbed the young scientist that she could hear them. The first sermon was completely lost on her ears, and at times like this Ema only wished that she were innocent enough to go back to that kind of blessed ignorance.
Unable to sleep, Ema crawled out of bed. If she was going to be awake, she might as well make the best of her time. After changing and freshening up, she crawled into her small makeshift laboratory and started fiddling with some chemicals and a Bunsen burner. As an alchemist, heat and the absence thereof were very important concepts that required study; adding or removing heat was a simple energy transferral with her power, and it paid to know your main weapon inside and out.
Everything was fine until she heard the door slam. Ema nearly jumped out of her skin at the sound, yelping and turning to find the violator of the silence. Once she found the source, she could feel her heart skip a beat and her breath catch in her lungs.
There, in the doorway, stood Matt Engarde.
Her body froze. 'No, this isn't right...' He slowly approached her, grinning like the cat who caught the canary. No, this isn't how this is supposed to go...' She forced her frozen limps to move, and she moved backward. 'There's supposed to be pain.... what about Yuuko's spell...?' Time passed in a fog. 'He's supposed to be dead!!'
Matt reached out for her, and the world jerked back into real-time. With a screech, Ema flung her entire experiment--flame and all--into his face and took off. The thought of using her power never occurred to her; she was running on pure fight-or-flight instinct. She ignored his howls of pain and concentrated on getting the front door open. Somehow, miraculously, she managed to get to the street before he recovered enough to give chase.
Once he started after her, however, it was only a matter of time before he caught up with her; even without enhancement, Matt was much faster than she was. He caught her arm and swung her around until her back connected with a wall with a sick-sounding crack. He grinned at her cry of pain and watched as she slowly shrank against the wall. "Ah." He yanked on her arm and held it high above her head, forcing Ema to maintain posture. "Can't have you trying to disappear like that, babe."
Words no longer existed. Ema managed to stammer something akin to 'let me go' between her sobs, which only caused Matt to laugh in his horrible way. "What, didn't you miss me?" He pinned her to the wall with the weight of his own body, and Ema had barely enough time to cry harder with terror before she felt cold metal against her throat. As before, the world suddenly came back into clear focus.
"What are you...?"
He leered. "I'm only gonna say this once. Join up, or it's curtains, babe."
Join up? He didn't mean join the Church, did he? Even through her paralyzing fear, Ema knew the answer. It was the same as always. "No." Not as long as he was a member. No... not ever.
Matt made a face of flippant disapproval and gave a simple shrug. "That's too bad. I would have guessed that you, of all people, would be into it." There was a flash of the knife, and the world started to fade. She felt pain. She was choking.
And then her body gave up the ghost.
