Sousuke jogged down the street. The sun had already risen past the looming office buildings in what was normally Hong Kong's busiest district, and the clear blue skies overhead reflected the new found clarity with which he saw life. The circling thoughts and incomprehensible feelings that had confused him these last few weeks seemed to have disappeared. Instead, a clear purpose had taken their place.
She was waiting for him. He had to protect her.
As he rounded the corner, he could see her standing in front of a park gate across the street. She was looking in the opposite direction and couldn’t see him approaching. Sousuke quickened his pace. As a professional, he prided himself not only on completing his missions, but on completing them well. It wouldn’t do to make Chidori wait.
As he stepped off the sidewalk into the street, a sudden breeze began to blow. Brushing the hair out of her face, Chidori began to turn around. The breath caught in his chest, and Sousuke stopped.
She’s going to see me.
Powered by a sudden wave of joy, he took a quick step forward. As his foot met the ground, the world suddenly dissolved. The blue sky, the gleaming buildings, Kaname’s figure in the distance, everything was swallowed by inky darkness. In the split second before he lost consciousness, Sousuke couldn’t decide if the world had disappeared or if he had disappeared.

Pain. That was the first word Sousuke thought of when he realized he was lying face up on the ground. Slowly opening his eyes, he found that the clear azure sky had been replaced by brown gritty smog. Where there had been shining steel buildings lay rusty deserted warehouses. That couldn't be right. The pounding in his head must have affected his senses. While gathering the strength to pull himself up from this vulnerable position where any child could stab him in the gut, three frantic thoughts rushed through his head.
Where am I? What happened? Where is Chidori?
Sousuke had barely made it to his feet when a sudden flash of motion to his left sent adrenaline coursing throughout his body. Spying a pile of debris approximately six feet behind him, he quickly ducked behind it and pulled out his gun. Was he about to meet a friend or foe?
