1781: After losing the Battle of Yorktown, British forces officially offerred their surrender, thereby ending the major fighting of the American Revolutionary War. Generals Washington and Rochambeau accepted the signed surrender of General Cornwallis, resulting in the capture of 7,000 British soldiers.
