I tried to put in enough hints to say that they're keeping him ignorant of everything. No light, no mirrors or anything that reflects an image, the only voices he heard until his original showed up was behind the door thus he "spoke" very softly...

It'd be interesting to work more in, but this was a fleeting muse that bopped me upside the head right before work.
