An Athame for Luna

This athame was designed to give the effect of holding the moon in one's hand. The blades were takes from two karambits, selected because of their fairly crescent shape. Happily, when the handles were being cut away, it was discovered that the tangs did not extend the length of the handle, but terminated in small rings. A sandwich of ebony (such a lovely dark wood) and maple (a favorite of Luna) was made around the tangs.

When the sandwich was completed and shaped, oak dowels were inserted through the ebony and the rings of the tangs. One dowel was left light, the other darkened with a wood burner, to represent the full and dark moon. The stand was a gift from Joann and Betty, who felt it might come to good use. :)

The end result calls to mind a line from our line's moon rituals: "Consider moonlight, so civil, yet so savage."
