I had orientation this morning for my new job. It was just an hour and a half or so, but that was good since we weren't paid for it anyway. It looks like I'll be hopefully getting decent hours since I'll at least be able to do both the children's center subbing and the special education subbing. I can't start until Monday since tomorrow is a staff development day. There were about 12 of us in the orientation, so I guess I have a bit of competition for assignments, but most of them were just hired as subs for special ed, not children's center, so hopefully that means I get more hours in the children's centers. We all got a handout for a job posting that is basically the same thing as what we're going to do: it's a sub paraprofessional position working with special ed kids. However, this job guarantees 30 hours a week for the employee and you have to work six hours a day, five days a week, AND it's $5 more an hour! I put down my name as being interested in the position, and only three others did the same, and we were told there were ten open slots for it, so hopefully that means I will get a position. Denise (the lady holding our orientation) told us all we'd have to do once we express interest in the position is interview, and then they'd select us from there. I feel like I interview well, and it'll be nice to already be an employee of SFUSD.
I ended up spending some extra time in San Francisco to go over to the elementary school where I applied for a computer lab position that I'd really like. I ended up getting to meet the principal and ask her about the position, and she said that the position is being put on hold for the time being because of the most recent budget cuts. :/ However, she did say she'd had a lot of applicants coming in asking about the position who ended up not being interested in it after all once they found out that the position is for actually teaching computer skills on your own, and not just helping a teacher out. I told her that I had experience doing exactly what this position requires, so I'd still be interested. She said she'd let me know when she finds anything out about whether they can hire someone or not. I hope and I think I made a good impression... we'll see.
I really am hoping for something more regular, although the special ed position I put my name down for today would be regular but at the same time kind of annoying cos I'd be constantly having to call and find out where my assignment would be, etc. As it is, I may have phone calls for assignments as early as 5 in the morning. But I gotta take what I can get, and I'm excited to be at least working for SFUSD at the moment. It feels like home, working for a school district again.
It was a gorgeous day in San Francisco, as well, so it was really nice to be walking around and seeing the sights of the city. I took a few photos with my phone, but I still need to figure out a good way to get them off of it.
I am a bit hungry now and I'm tired from getting up at 7:45 this morning (which still wasn't early enough - traffic made me 15 minutes late to orientation :( ) so I think I'm going to eat lunch and then take a nap.
