A Rose with a stinger!

Today was my first day of classes at CSUS! It mostly went pretty well.

My first class of the day was Spanish. This class has been making me nervous, not because I am nervous about taking Spanish... but because there haven't been any books assigned for it yet, and there STILL isn't a teacher assigned for it yet! I'm crossing my fingers the class doesn't get cancelled! Today's meeting was cancelled due to still having lack of a teacher, but I guess the teacher is supposed to be there tomorrow. Talk about last minute! I was kinda annoyed that I could've slept in a bit more this morning, but oh well. One nice thing was that I recognised a girl from Orientation. Her name is Jen, and I had talked to her during Orientation about studying Spanish along with English (cos we both wanted to do that). So now she's trying to do a dual major with the two, she said. :)

Since that class didn't happen, I had some time to kill, so I wandered around some and got out my DS to see if I could get wifi on campus. Sure enough, my DS found some unlocked access points. However, frustration ensued when it decided to freeze EVERY time I tried connecting to the wifi. GRRR. I really hope this doesn't mean I can't use my DS with wifi ever again. I don't know why it suddenly started doing that. It was working fine with wifi last week. If this keeps up, I'll have to see if it's still under warranty or something.

Since I couldn't get that working, I wandered over to the library to see if I could print a couple of things out. Namely, my schedule, since I accidentally left it in my parents' car over the weekend. I had written it out, but alas, I like having the nicely printed out copy. So I got that printed out after some waiting for a computer, and I think after that I decided to head over to Lassen Hall for my next class: Sociology 118 - Chicano Community.

This class was pretty cool. The teacher is a Chicano himself, which figures, and he speaks with an awesome Mexican accent. He immigrated here from Mexico when he was a kid, so it's cool that he has firsthand experience to draw from when teaching the class. Looks like it'll be an interesting class, if not eye-opening a bit. I look forward to learning more about Chicanos!

Almost immediately after that class, I had to go over to Mendocino Hall for British Literature. This class is in a lecture hall, which seems a bit odd for a Lit class, but I guess we'll be split up into discussion groups throughout the semester to mitigate some of the anonymity. In any case, I'm REALLY looking forward to this class. We're studying early British Literature, beginning with the early Middle Ages, up through the late Middle Ages. Old English and Middle English fascinate me and I really look forward to learning more about how our language has evolved from other languages. :)

Aside from the nerdy English major side of me being pleased with the class, the social side of me was also pleased. At the end of class, a girl came up to me who I didn't recognise at first, but once she started talking to me, I did - Simone, who I had met at Orientation! She was the girl I spent most of Orientation hanging out with. I was very happy to see her, as I had wondered about her earlier in the day, when I saw Jen. Turned out she was also signed up for American Lit at the same time as me, so I was happy to find this out. However, we had to part for the time being since I had to go to ballet.

Ballet was okay. The teacher is requiring us to wear black leotards and pink tights, which I was afraid of. I'm going to have to go shopping tomorrow for some more of those, since I only have a couple black leotards and pink tights. The teacher is also requiring that we go to 3 dance performances this semester and critique each one, with a ticket stub stapled to the critique. I'm hoping I'll be able to do this... I'll be busy this semester with band, so hopefully that won't be too conflicting and hopefully there'll be enough performances to go to. Thursday we begin dancing, and it'll be the "audition" for the class. I'm not concerned about this, since I'm sure it'll just be to weed out people who know practically nothing about ballet.

After ballet, I ate lunch outside Capistrano Hall since I used my music locker to hold my lunch. I ran into Simone after eating, and we hung out for about an hour and a half before our American Lit class. It's nice to have a friend to spend some of the time with, and I'm glad I have her in two of my classes. :)

American Lit was all right. I'm not as excited about that as I am about British Lit, because a lot of the literature is stuff I read in high school, and the discussion seemed to get kind of political today. Oh, well. I'm glad Simone is there with me.

The Hornet Shuttle is pretty convenient, so taking that will be easy. Tomorrow I've got to take two different buses, though, to get to a copy & print place to buy this Course Reader for Chicano Community, as well as to get to Capezio for some leotards & tights. At least I'll have a lot of the day to do that - I only have Spanish in the morning and then Band in the late afternoon. :)

That's all for now. Sorry for being so long-winded. I'll try to catch up with everyone soon!
