Reita/Ruki - The Worst Kind of Liar - G - Oneshot

Oct 28, 2007 22:32

“I’m so glad we’re best friends,” Reita said with a smile, paying at the counter and handing over one cup of coffee to Ruki. Ruki took the coffee, sighing quietly.

“I’m glad we’re best friends too, Rei,” he replied, forcing as much enthusiasm as he possibly could into his response. He followed his best friend over to a table, sitting across from him as they drank their coffee.

Ruki has a problem.

Ruki is a liar.

Not knowing when exactly it started, he noticed he kept spitting out lies. Now, it’s one thing to lie about getting a shirt on sale as opposed to paying full price. It’s a completely different issue when it comes to lying about important things-things involving people's feelings.

Ruki lies about things involving people’s feelings.

Again, it’s one thing to lie to a stranger when they accidentally step on your foot. They’ll apologize and ask if it hurt, and in response the stranger receives “You stepped on my foot? I didn’t even feel it!” and then both parties will carry on with their day-not thinking twice about their encounter. It’s a completely different issue when you lie to your friends, though.

Ruki lies to his friends.

Ruki lies to his best friend.

Ruki lies to his best friend about things involving people’s feelings.

Ruki lies to his best friend about his feelings.

Suddenly, Ruki noticed a hand waving in front of his face; the noises he previously wrote off as being the voices of the crowd and had ignored slowly turned into “Ruki… Ruki… Ruki…” Ruki finally realized Reita was trying to get his attention.

“Sorry, what was that?” he asked, snapping out of his spacey state.

“I asked if you’re alright. Are you alright?”

“Oh, yeah. I was just thinking.”

“About what? Anything important?”

“No. Nothing important.” Ruki lied, as he noticed the cup of coffee he was holding was no longer warm against his hand. Glancing across the table, he also noticed Reita’s cup was now empty and he wondered how long he’d unintentionally been ignoring Reita’s presence.

“Okay…” Reita began, unsure. “Well, if something was wrong, you’d tell me, wouldn’t you?”

“Of course,” Ruki lied.

“You know you can tell me anything, don’t you?”

“Of course I know that,” he lied again, cringing as he realized the last three times he opened his mouth the only things that came out were lies.

A smile of satisfaction on his face, Reita reached across the table and ruffled Ruki’s hair. “Good. I wouldn’t want my partner in crime to be unhappy.”

With a half smile, Ruki said, “I’m not unhappy, I promise,” and ticked off his response as “lie number four” in his mind.

Later that night, Ruki pulled out his lyrics notebook. It was always easy for Ruki to write songs when his mood was less than okay. What wasn’t easy was acknowledging that the problems he wrote lyrics about were real. Tonight, he wrote lyrics like he’d been waiting all his life for paper and pen to express what his mind held, but just finally found his writing utensils.

He didn’t reread any of the words he wrote, though. Once a line was finished, he moved on to the next and then the next until finally the song was complete. Then, he simply turned the page and started a new one.

No, he wouldn’t reread his lyrics tonight. He didn’t have the energy to handle the reminder of how much he really loved his best friend and how often he lied about it.

Deciding he’d written plenty for the time being, Ruki closed his book and dropped it on the floor by his bed. He felt tired. Being a liar took a lot of energy and that was a fact Ruki was becoming very familiar with. And with that, he slumped against the pillows on his bed and drifted into an uneasy sleep.

“Haven’t you ever heard the story of the boy who cried wolf, Ruki?” a faceless voice spoke. “A boy decides to make problems for other people by pretending there was danger approaching. He continued to cry, ‘Wolf! Wolf!’ Finally, the people around him grew tired of the cry. But one day, there really was a wolf, Ruki. That boy cried ‘Wolf!’ until he could cry no more and no one helped him. Do you really want to lie about being okay until finally no one will ask you any longer and you’re left alone with no one to help you? Do you really want him to believe you’re okay?”

Ruki awakened with a start-his body covered in a cold sweat. He panted as he sat up in his bed. Pulling his knees to his chest and hugging them tightly, he began to cry. He cried as he thought of every lie he’d told Reita. He cried as he thought of how he needed to tell Reita about all the lies he’d been spilling. He cried as he wondered what would happen after that. He cried until his eyes stopped producing tears and his mind stopped producing thoughts. He cried until finally his body shut down and he fell back to sleep.

Hours later, sunshine poured through the window in Ruki’s bedroom and warmed his face. With a grunt, Ruki rolled onto his back and rubbed the unpleasant crustiness from his eyes-taking notice of how swollen his eyelids were. He sighed, throwing his legs over the side of the bed. As he looked at his legs, he realized he was still wearing his clothes from yesterday. He also realized he honestly could care less.

Instead of changing and getting ready for the day, he glanced at the clock-it was 10:57am-and reached for his cell phone. His fingers pressed the buttons of the number he knew so well with a fierce determination-yet that determination had undertones of nervousness and uncertainty. Hearing a dial tone made the act he was performing much more real, until finally he heard what would make it as real as the phone in his hands.

“Hello?”

“Hey, Reita.”

“Ruki! What’s going on?”

“I need to talk to you.”

“Oh? Would you like me to head over that way?”

“Yeah, as soon as possible.”

“Sure, Ruki…” He said-his voice laced with concern. “I’ll be there in 15 minutes.”

Closing his phone, Ruki made his way into his bathroom and brushed his teeth. That’s really all the energy he was willing to spare on his morning ritual. He skipped the rest-even changing his clothes-just to save his strength for something much more vital.

Shortly after, Ruki heard a knock at his door. He trudged his way towards the entrance of his apartment and opened the door, stepping aside immediately to make room for Reita to walk inside.

“What’s up?” He asked, walking into Ruki’s entry hall.

Ruki closed the door, turning and walking towards his couch. He sat down as he said “I need to talk to you about something.”

“I gathered,” Reita commented, following Ruki’s actions and sitting next to his friend on the couch. “Is it anything serious?”

This was it. Ruki’s mind was telling him “Say yes. Say yes. Just tell him that yes it is serious. It’s only one word. It’s only one word with only three letters. Just. Say. Yes."

“Yes.” Ruki spoke, and finally it was the truth. “Yes, it’s serious.”

Reita leaned towards Ruki as his eyebrows furrowed in worry. “Are you okay?”

“No, I’m not okay.” He felt like crying. He really felt like crying.

“Is something wrong?” Reita asked-his tone making his concern for Ruki apparent-as he took one of Ruki’s hands in his.

“Yes, something’s wrong. Something’s wrong with me,”-he paused, trying to gather the courage to continue-“I’m a liar, Reita.”

Reita’s grip on Ruki’s hand loosened slightly-a result of his sudden confusion. “A-a liar?”

“Yes, I’m a liar. And the worst kind, at that.”

“What’s the worst kind of liar?”

“The kind that can’t even tell his best friend he’s not really okay.”

“Oh, Ruki…” he said softly, letting go of Ruki’s hand only to wrap an arm around his shoulders-pulling his friend closer. “I thought you knew you could tell me if something was the matter. I thought you knew you could tell me anything.”

“Reita, you only thought that because I lied to you,” he said, as his stability finally disappeared and he let out a sob.

Climbing off of the couch and kneeling on the floor in front of Ruki, Reita took both of his hands in his own, asking “What in the world would make you feel like you needed to lie to me about that, Ruki?”

“I was scared,” he revealed amongst a mess of sobs.

“Scared? Scared of what?” he asked, letting go of one of Ruki’s hands so he could wipe away his friend’s tears.

“The truth,” he choked out, a wave of new tears breaking free. “The truth that I was in love with my best friend.”

Ruki suddenly felt himself being pulled to stand-his body being supported by something incredibly warm. He felt comforting hands gently grasp his face, urging him to look into the face of the one he loved so much-to notice the smile that face adorned.

“Ruki, didn’t you know it’s better to face the truth with someone you love? Didn’t you know it’s easier when two people can face their truths together?”-Reita paused, lowering his voice-“Didn’t you know you should never doubt your best friend?” Reita leaned forward and placed a gentle kiss on Ruki’s forehead.

Ruki squeezed his eyes shut, willing away the tears that wouldn't stop falling. He felt warm breath on his lips as that familiar voice floated through his ears, "Ruki, didn't you know I'm in love with my best friend too?"

A/N: I'm such a sucker for angsty fics with happy endings. I won't pretend it's not true. I'm really popping out fics like nobody's business, eh? I'm still a little worried it's bothersome seeing the same author so frequently :-\
