Comments: I've had this idea for a while and I finally got to writing it XD ENJOY!
Reita inspected his reflection in a mirror one last time before he’d need to make his way out on stage for the GazettE’s live that night. He wasn’t usually much of a primper, but he wanted to be sure he didn’t have any strange red marks from resting his head on his arm or something. A quick drool check might be a good idea, too. Leaning closer to the mirror, Reita noticed a tiny black line on his cheek.
“Reita, what are you doing?” Uruha asked as he popped his head around the corner of a nearby wall. “We have to go!”
“Just a second,” he answered and leaned closer to the mirror, bringing a finger to his cheek and gingerly touching the black line with his finger. “Ahh,” he said with a satisfied smile. “Come here, Uruha.”
“Hmm?” Uruha hummed curiously, walking towards Reita.
Holding his finger out to show Uruha the lash he just removed from his cheek, Reita said, “Make a wish.” Uruha bounced slightly on his feet, his delight evident by the smile spreading across his face. Leaning forward, Uruha inhaled as he squeezed his eyes shut. After giving himself enough time to properly make his wish, he then blew the lash off of Reita’s finger.
“What did you wish for this time?” Reita asked.
“You know I can’t tell you that, Reita!” Uruha said with mock indignity. “My wish may never come true.” Reita just smiled and nodded at Uruha and then followed him as he started walking towards the other members.
Reita hadn’t expected Uruha to answer his question. Uruha had always given the same answer whenever Reita asked that question after every wish he’d make. That was a lot of question asking and a lot of answering, because Uruha made a lot of wishes. As far back as Reita could remember being friends with Uruha, he’d always known Uruha to be fond of making wishes.
------------------------------
Reita was kicking a soccer ball around in an open grassy area of the park. He was managing his dribbling pretty well, but every once in a while the soccer ball would escape his control-much like it had just done. With a sigh, Reita watched his soccer ball plow its way through the grass, towards a crouching boy Reita hadn’t noticed until right then.
“Hey!” the boy said angrily as he jerked his head up to look at whose soccer ball had disturbed him. Noticing Reita, the boy shoved the ball towards him and said, “Watch where you’re kicking that thing!” With a huff, the boy stood up and moved a few feet away from where he had been and crouched down once more and inspected a new area of grass.
“I’m sorry, geesh!” Reita apologized with slight exasperation, the ball stopping as it bumped his foot. The boy just gave a dismissive wave of his hand and didn’t even bother to look at or speak to Reita again. Rolling his eyes, Reita walked closer until he was standing next to the squatting boy. “I said sorry,” Reita tried again, hoping for some acknowledgement.
“It’s okay,” the boy said-still not bothering to look at Reita.
“What are you doing that’s so interesting, then?” Reita asked as he crouched next to the boy, leaning over to see what was so enthralling.
“I’m trying to decide what to wish for,” he answered, reaching down and plucking a dandelion from the ground. “I found a very nice one”-he lifted the dandelion a little to show he was talking about it-“but your soccer ball smushed it before I had a chance to make a wish. So I found this one instead.”
Reita was stunned at his explanation and it took him a minute to think of a response. “I didn’t mean to ruin your dandelion,” he said apologetically. “I lost control of the soccer ball.” Reita watched curiously as the boy stared intently at the dandelion. He felt bad for disrupting his concentration, but the silence was grating on his nerves. “My name’s Reita,” he started his introduction. “I’m ten years old and I like soccer and Dragon Ball Z.”
The boy was silent. Taking a deep breath, he squeezed his eyes shut tightly and after a few seconds he exhaled heavily-blowing all of the seeds off of the stem. He smiled with satisfaction, dropping the stem to the ground. “What did you wish for?” Reita asked, remembering the boy had explained he was trying to think of a wish.
“I can’t tell you that! My wish might not come true!” he explained with wide eyes. Reita scrunched his face doubtfully. “I’ll tell you this though,” the boy added. “My name is Uruha. I’m ten and I like soccer and Dragon Ball Z, too.”
------------------------------
Smiling at the memory, Reita filed it away once more to enjoy again a different day. Yes, even the memory of how they met involved Uruha and his love of wishes. Wishing made Uruha happy though, so Reita supposed he loved wishes too. He loved seeing Uruha happy, after all.
The last thought Reita had before he made his way onto the stage was that if he were to ever find a magic lamp, he would gladly let Uruha have it. Then at least three of his wishes would come true.
------------------------------
“Happy birthday, dear Reita… Happy birthday to you!” four voices sang enthusiastically as Reita smiled from his seat at Uruha’s kitchen table.
He turned to look at Uruha seated beside him and softly said, “Make a wish.” Uruha grinned and took a deep breath, squeezing his eyes shut as he thought of a wish and then releasing his breath across the flames of the candles-blowing all of them out with one breath.
“I can’t believe you always give your birthday wishes to Uruha,” Ruki chuckled and rolled his eyes.
“Yeah! How come no one ever does that for me?!” Aoi asked as he pouted, earning a shove from Kai.
“What do I need wishes for?” Reita asked with a laugh. “I’m happy!” he explained with a shrug. Twisting his lips with contemplation, Reita then added, “Besides, Uruha likes making wishes. So this is a better use of my birthday candles, right?”
“Exactly!” Uruha piped up in agreement, wrapping his arms around Reita and giving him an affectionate squeeze. “Thank you for always giving me your birthday wishes,” he said, resting his head on Reita’s shoulder.
Reita smiled sheepishly and ran his fingers through his bangs, pulling them over his face a bit to hide his blush. “As long as you’re happy,” he mumbled, enjoying the feeling of Uruha clinging to him.
“Sap, sap, sap! Best buds for life! We know, we know,” Ruki groaned playfully. “Let’s get to cake-eating!” he added, clapping his hands together as he licked his lips.
After the five of them had devoured the cake (including the crumbs, which Ruki had scraped into his mouth) Uruha stood up and tugged on Reita’s arm. “Let’s go outside for a while, okay? It’s a pretty night,” he said quietly. Smiling and nodding, Reita stood as well and let Uruha pull him towards the door. “Try not to wreck my apartment,” Uruha shouted over his shoulder at their band mates.
They had walked in a pleasant silence for a while until they finally reached the park. It wasn’t unusual for Reita to join Uruha for a night in the park, if the weather suited. They’d simply sit under one of the large trees, leaning against the trunk as they talked about whatever was on their minds. It was rare for them to ever see stars, but when the sky provided the sight, they enjoyed the view.
Tonight seemed to be extra starry, Reita observed as they sat down under their favorite tree. “It’s bright, isn’t it?” he commented.
“Yeah. The sky knew it was your birthday, I guess,” Uruha said with a giggle. Reita watched as Uruha plucked a blade of grass and fumbled with it as he tied it in a knot. Grasping one end of the knotted blade of grass, Uruha turned slightly and offered the other end to Reita. This had happened enough for Reita to know what to do. Once Reita had taken hold of the other end, they both tugged on the grass until it snapped in two.
Uruha gasped with a grin as he noticed Reita’s half of the blade of grass was the half with the knot. “It looks like you get your birthday wish after all!” Uruha said. Reita simply smiled and shook his head, ready to protest, but Uruha nodded and urged, “Come on, Reita! I’m sure you have something you can wish for.”
Smiling, Reita just shook his head again and plucked a blade of grass-tying it in a knot. He held out the blade for Uruha to hold, too, and they both gave a tug until the blade snapped in half. “You have a wish, this time,” Reita grinned as he noticed Uruha’s half was the half with the knot. Uruha closed his eyes and remained silent for a few seconds as he made his wish and then opened them again, smiling at Reita. “What did you wish for?” Reita asked.
“I can’t tell you! It might not come true,” Uruha answered-the same as always.
“Have any of your wishes ever come true?” Reita asked as he chuckled.
Uruha shoved Reita gently and responded, “Of course! Don’t you think I’d give up wishing if it never worked?”
Reita stared at Uruha curiously and then asked, “Some of your wishes have come true? Do you really think it was from wishing?”
“Absolutely!” Uruha answered immediately.
“What kinds of wishes came true?!” Reita asked with surprise.
Uruha scrunched his nose a little before saying “Well I guess it’s alright to talk about them since they’ve already come true.” He paused briefly before asking, “Do you remember Kensuke? From soccer club?”
Reita furrowed his brow as he fished his memories for a face to place with the name. Eyebrows rising as he recalled the boy, Reita asked, “What about him?”
“My mom always had me invite him over or would encourage me to go home with him after soccer practice, you know… to help her son with his social life, I guess,” Uruha said.
“What does this have to do with your wishes?” Reita asked with confusion.
“I couldn’t stand the guy! That first day you and I met, I made a wish that my mom would stop forcing me to be friends with Kensuke…”
“Uh huh…”
“Next thing you know, you had joined the same soccer club and we were hanging out as often as possible,” Uruha said with a grin. “No more Kensuke!”
“Yeah,” Reita sighed. “It’s a damn shame I can’t stand you.”
“Hey!” Uruha screeched as he shoved a laughing Reita. “Anyway,” Uruha interjected Reita’s laughter. “That wish came true.”
“That’s a lame wish!” Reita snorted.
“It’s not!” Uruha defended, crossing his arms over his chest. “And I have other wishes, too!”
“Alright then,” Reita said with a smirk. “Tell me your best wish yet. The wish you most wanted to come true.” Uruha turned away from Reita a little and mumbled something Reita didn’t understand. “What did you say?” he asked.
Uncrossing his arms, Uruha moved his hands to the grass and ran his fingers through it as he said, “I can’t tell you that wish.”
“Oh?” Reita said, his eyebrow peaking with interest. “Why not?”
“Well… It’s not come true yet,” Uruha explained. “So, I don’t want to jinx it by telling you what it is!”
“Mhm,” Reita hummed with amusement. “And how long have you been waiting for it to come true?”
“I dunno… A while, I guess,” Uruha answered. “A couple of years, maybe?”
“A couple of years?!” Reita asked in shock.
“Yeah, ten years about…” Uruha trailed off.
Reita gasped, quickly twisting his body to face Uruha. “TEN YEARS?!” he shouted incredulously. What could Uruha possibly have wanted for ten years and never had? The only thing Reita had ever wanted that badly was… well, Uruha.
“I guess? I don’t remember exactly, okay?!” Uruha whined. “It’s an old wish!”
“If it hasn’t come true by now, Uruha…”-Reita chuckled and shook his head-“You might want to give up on that one.”
“Don’t say that!” Uruha said.
“Well if you’ve been making the same wish for ten years and it hasn’t come true yet, don’t you think it’s time to make a new wish?” Reita asked gently.
Shrugging sadly, Uruha said, “I’ll just keep wishing for this one. I’d really like for it to come true.”
Reita nodded and then sighed, wondering what Uruha could want so badly. Why didn’t he know of this already? They were best friends, after all. Shouldn’t Reita know about something Uruha wanted so much? He bit his bottom lip as he tried to ignore the hurt feelings tugging at his heart. Finally giving in to his hurt, Reita quietly said, “I want to know what you’re wishing for so I can give it to you.”
Uruha gasped, tugging frantically at Reita’s arm as he said, “Look, Reita! Look!” Reita turned to see where Uruha was pointing and noticed a streak of white quickly flying across the sky. “A shooting star!” Uruha cried out with excitement. “We have to make wishes!”
Reita turned to look at Uruha and saw him squeezing his eyes shut, they way he always would as he made his wishes. One wish should be alright, Reita figured. He could think of at least one thing to wish for and shooting stars were a rare occurrence. Reita also squeezed his eyes shut and thought of what he had said before they had seen the star.
I wish I knew what Uruha’s best wish was so I could give him what he wants so badly.
“Did you make a wish?” Uruha asked, pulling Reita out of his thoughts. Opening his eyes, Reita turned to smile at Uruha and nodded in response. Uruha smiled back and the two sat in silence for a few minutes, just enjoying the night and being with each other. Uruha broke the silence and said, “About what you said before we made wishes… did you really want to know?”
Reita clicked his tongue and answered, “Of course I do! If it’s that important for you to have wished for it for ten years, then of course I want to know what it is.” Reita heard Uruha sighing deeply beside him, so he turned to look at him. Uruha also turned, locking gazes with Reita for a few seconds before averting his eyes. He reached down and gently took one of Reita’s hands in both of his, holding it carefully-as if it were a precious and breakable item.
Blushing, Reita’s eyes widened at the gesture. “U-Uruha, w-what-“ Reita started, but was cut off by Uruha.
“It’s you,” he answered softly and gave Reita’s hand a gentle squeeze.
“M-me?” he asked, not understanding what exactly Uruha meant.
“I’ve been wishing for you, Reita,” Uruha repeated. He sighed before continuing with, “I wish that one day you’ll love me as much as I love you. I wish that you’d never leave me. That’s my best wish… the one I most want to come true.”
Reita gaped at Uruha, absolutely stunned at what he’d just revealed. Finally getting a grip on reality, Reita shook his head slightly before a smile slowly crept across his face. Pulling his hand out of Uruha’s, he moved a hand to Uruha’s cheek-turning his head to face him. Smiling sweetly at Uruha’s startled expression, he leaned closer and placed a chaste kiss on Uruha’s lips.
Pulling away slightly, Reita chuckled and said, “You’ve wasted a lot of wishes, Uruha.”
