Synopsis: Reita wasn’t one of those do-gooder folk who have to butt in everyone’s business, but how was he expected to react to the sight he saw? He wasn't expected to ignore it, was he? At the street corner, there was the most distressed human Reita had ever seen.
Comments: I had intended for this to be a oneshot, but it would have been an insanely long oneshot.

“I’m leaving Sakamoto-san!”  Reita alerted his boss as he untied a band of cloth from around his nose and then shoved it in his pants pocket. After he was sure he was granted permission to leave work, he grabbed his box of butter cookies-stuffing them in his coat pocket-and took off for his apartment. Reita always liked butter cookies, especially if they were from the sweets shop at which he worked. They were cookies, but at the same time they weren’t too sweet for his tastes. For someone who didn’t like sweets, it seemed a little strange that he had a job in a sweets shop. It wasn’t a bad job, but the smell did bother him sometimes. That’s his reasoning behind the strip of cloth he wore over his nose while he worked.

Reita was walking on the busy city sidewalk and was approaching an intersection where he’d need to cross the street. Now, Reita wasn’t one of those do-gooder folk who have to butt in everyone’s business. He wasn’t. But how was he expected to react to the sight he saw? He wasn't expected to ignore it, was he?

At the street corner, there was the most distressed human Reita had ever seen. A small figure was huddled against the wall of the corner building, hugging a large envelope to their body as they cried. Strangely, Reita thought of a lost child as he looked at the panicky being he was nearing. The person’s eyes were darting aimlessly at the area surrounding them through a veil of reddish hair-looking nothing less than absolutely terrified.

Reita wasn’t one of those do-gooder folk, but he was a nice guy. And this poor person needed some attention. Maneuvering his way through the crowd on the sidewalk, Reita cautiously approached the figure and lightly tapped them on the shoulder.

“Don’t touch me!” he shouted; the deep voice was obviously a male. Reita was startled to be yelled at for what he thought was an innocent action. The guy continued in a desperate and much softer voice, “Please don’t… don’t touch me. Please don’t touch me.”

“I’m sorry,” Reita apologized sincerely. He held his hands up in a gesture signifying he wasn’t a threat and said, “I just wanted to see if you were okay. Do you need some help?” The guy didn’t answer Reita’s question though. Actually, Reita wasn’t sure he even heard the question. He was too busy freaking out.

“Listen,” Reita started and was glad to notice he had the guy’s attention, “You look like you could use some help. Are you lost?”

“I’m not an idiot!” he snapped. “I’ve lived here my whole life! I know where I’m going!”

Reita drew his head backwards in surprise as he looked at the guy with wide eyes. “I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to offend you! Just tell me what’s wrong so I can help you!”

“I need to take this envelope to my work place,” he answered between many deep breaths which Reita assumed were to help prevent him from hyperventilating.

Furrowing his brow with confusion, Reita asked, “Where’s the problem?”

The guy let out a few dry sobs before he tried to take more deep breaths and finally managed to answer, “It’s… it’s over on that street across from us.”

“I’m… I’m sorry, but I don’t understand. You know where it is and it’s close by…” he trailed off, hoping to trigger a better explanation from his new, panicky friend.

“I’m dromophobic!” he shouted as he fumbled in his jacket for a paper bag and began breathing exercises with the bag to stop his hyperventilating.

Reita could do nothing but wait until the guy had calmed down enough for him to ask what the fuck dromophobic was. After the guy put the bag back in his jacket and took a few more breaths, Reita decided he had calmed down enough for him to ask, “What’s dromophobic?”

“Someone who has a fear of crossing streets,” he answered as he hugged the envelope closer to his chest.

To say Reita was shocked would be understating his reaction a bit. This guy was freaking out this badly because he had to cross the street?! As silly as Reita thought it was, he couldn’t ignore this guy’s obvious need for help. That in mind, Reita said, “Why don’t we cross it together?”

“No! No I can’t!” he shouted, quickly dispelling the almost-sort of but not really at all-calm mood.

“Hey, it’ll be okay,” Reita tried to calm him down again and reached his hand out to pat the guy’s shoulder.

As soon as he noticed Reita’s hand nearing his body, the guy drew away and shouted, “Don’t touch me! Get away!”

“I just want to help you!” Reita growled with frustration. With a heavy sigh, he said, “Tell me where you work and I’ll take them there for you.”

“No! It’s my job! I have to do it!” he shrieked as he started to cry again. “I have to… I have to…” he muttered through his tears.

Totally at a loss for what to do, Reita gently said, “There’s a light, okay? It tells you when to walk so cars won’t hit you.”

“But people DIE! People get hit by cars all the time!”

Shaking his head, Reita assured, “You won’t! I’ll walk on the side by the cars. That way if anyone gets hit, it’ll be me!” He paused briefly to let the proposition sink in to the anxious stranger’s mind and then said, “I’ll hold your hand if it’ll make you feel better,” and reached out to grab the guy’s arm.

“PLEASE! DON’T!” he shouted and jerked away from Reita. ”Don’t… please don’t touch me. Please don’t touch me!”

“I’m sorry!” Okay, so the guy didn’t like being touched. “I just thought that might make you feel better. Look, you need to get that,”-he pointed to the envelope-“over there,”-he pointed to the other side of the street-“and I’ll help you do it.”

“Don’t touch me,” was his only response.

“I won’t! You can just stick close to my side, okay? We don’t have to touch.”

“If… if I do this,” he tried to say something, but was halted as new tears started flowing. He took a deep breath and then continued, “Can I hold onto your jacket?”

“Yeah!” Reita answered along with an enthusiastic nod; he was ecstatic that he was making progress with this poor guy. “Come on,” he said as he turned to walk towards the curb. He looked over his shoulder to make sure the guy was following. He was, but very hesitantly. “Come on!” Reita urged with a light chuckle. The guy hurried over to Reita’s side and gripped onto the back of his jacket tightly with one of his hands-the other hand tightly gripping his envelope.

They were waiting for the light to change color and Reita could see his companion nervously looking around him. Both out of curiosity and attempts to take his mind off of the situation, Reita asked, “What’s your name? Mine’s Reita.”

“R-Ruki,” he answered as he gripped Reita’s jacket more tightly, still not coming in contact with any part of Reita-only his jacket.

“Well Ruki-san, it looks like this is the time we should cross. Are you ready?”

“No! No I changed my mind!” he whined as he tried to rush away from Reita, but Reita grabbed the tail of his jacket and dragged him back over towards the curb.

“Ruki-san, just calm down. I won’t let you get hurt, alright?” Reita soothed. He supposed Ruki had agreed to attempt the street-cross again because he felt him grip onto his jacket once more. “Okay, we’re going to cross the street now. Just stay close and you’ll be fine.”

It felt like the trip was a lot farther than it actually was. Ruki was crying the entire time they crossed the street. Reita could hear his tears of anxiety and fear, but he knew the only way to help Ruki right now was to finish crossing that damn street. As soon as they stepped on the curb, Ruki ran over to the nearest building and huddled against it as he cried and took deep breaths.

“You did it Ruki-san!” Reita exclaimed, genuinely excited for Ruki. Ruki nodded quickly as he took deep breaths and tried to calm himself. “Let’s get that envelope to your work place, alright? Which is it?” Reita was a little startled as he saw Ruki pointing towards the tattoo parlor. “You work there?!” Ruki nodded as he started walking towards the building, dodging people as he made his way to the door. Reita hurried after him and followed Ruki inside the tattoo parlor.

“Aoi-san!” Ruki shouted. “Aoi-san!”

“Ruki?!” someone-Reita assumed it was Aoi-shouted in surprise from another room. Directly after the response, Reita saw a slender man with long black hair and a lip ring emerge from around the wall. “Ruki, what are you doing here?” he asked, his voice laced with concern.

“I’m sorry! I’m so sorry, Aoi-san!” Ruki said as he bowed and held the envelope with outstretched arms towards Aoi. Reita stood awkwardly off to the side as he watched this strange scene.

“It’s alright, Ruki. What happened?” Aoi asked as he took the envelope from Ruki and set it on the counter beside him.

“I’m so sorry! I… I…” Ruki bowed more deeply as he cried. He seemed to really struggle with whatever he needed to say. “I… I was too late to mail them! So I had to bring them over here!”

“Ruki it’s alright. Can you look at me and tell me about it?” Aoi asked, trying to end Ruki’s apologetic bow.

Ruki hesitantly righted his body and looked at Aoi with a tearstained face as he explained, “I thought I could do it! I thought it would be okay and I really couldn’t,”-Ruki paused as he cried a little more and then took some deep breaths to try and calm himself-“I couldn’t disappoint you! I had to bring the drawings!”

“You crossed the street by yourself?!” Aoi asked in utter shock.

“N-no! No, I couldn’t! Reita-san helped me…” Ruki answered as he gestured towards Reita. Now having Aoi’s attention, Reita waved awkwardly at the man.

“Thank you so much for helping him,” Aoi said as he bowed at Reita.

“It’s no problem, really…” Reita laughed nervously. “I couldn’t leave him there.”

“Ruki if you hang around a little longer, I can take you to your apartment,” Aoi offered.

“Um,” Reita started as he rubbed the back of his neck. “I don’t mind. I don’t have anything to do and you seem to still have some work left, so…”

Aoi looked at Ruki, silently questioning if this was okay with him. Ruki nodded and said, “He helped me before, so it’s okay. I don’t want to trouble you, Aoi-san.”

Smiling gently at Ruki, Aoi responded with, “Ruki I just want you to be safe. It’s no trouble, but since Reita-san offered to help and you don’t mind… this will get you home soon.”

… And it would have if Ruki hadn’t freaked out about crossing the street a second time. “Ruki-san, I won’t let you get hit by a car! You did it before, didn’t you?” Ruki gave a tiny nod as he huddled against the wall of the building by the intersection. “Come on, it’ll be quick and painless. Are you sure you don’t want to hold my hand?”

“N-NO! NO! Don’t touch me!” Ruki shouted as he pulled his arms out of Reita’s reach (even though Reita hadn’t reached for them.)

“Okay! I’m sorry! You can hold my jacket again and we’ll just do as we did before…” Reita suggested, glad to have Ruki edge his way closer to him and finally latch onto his jacket once again. The light changed color and Reita was proud of Ruki, because Ruki didn’t cry as they crossed the street this time. He was still clinging to Reita’s jacket-without actually touching him-but he only whimpered softly. As they reached the other side of the street, Reita cheered again for Ruki and was happy to see Ruki smiling at him. “You did it Ruki-san! You crossed the street twice!”

“I did it!” Ruki beamed at Reita and clapped his hands together excitedly. His excitement quickly faded and his facial expression resumed its look of panic.

“Ruki-san? What’s wrong?” Reita asked concernedly.

"Let's hurry, please!" he said as he grasped Reita's jacket sleeve and pulled him along the sidewalk.
