Chapter 01 Chapter 02 Chapter 03 Chapter 04 Chapter 05 Chapter 06 Chapter 07 Chapter 08 Chapter 09 It’s always been said that people tend to have a “spring in their step” when they’re in an especially good mood. Reita never knew anything about springy steps. If he was happy, then he was happy. There were the odd moments here and there where he’d been known to skip when he was feeling overly happy, but he couldn’t say if he’d ever walked with a spring in his step.
…Until now. He could feel a difference in the way he was walking. It was almost as if, instead of the concrete floor, Reita’s feet were stepping on that elusive “Cloud Nine” (also mentioned in reference to extreme cases of good-mood) and bouncing slightly on the impact. Reita supposed that all the nice ingredients used to make Cloud Nine were a bit springier than the materials used to make concrete. He decided the world should be covered with Cloud Nine; it was much nicer for walking.
It was no mystery to Reita why he felt as if he were walking on Cloud Nine. His Cloud Nine was made from happiness caused by Uruha. Everything seemed to be working out splendidly. Uruha had accepted Reita’s proposition of a date! Of course Reita couldn’t forget the joy he felt from knowing Aoi wasn’t death-glaring him any longer. He also couldn’t deny he was feeling happy about his friends finally coming together. There was no longer the division of Side Kai & Ruki and Side Aoi & Uruha with Reita stuck in the middle. Not that the sides had necessarily been fighting, but the division was clear; the sides hadn’t been friends with each other. That had changed, though. Reita was sure those were the ingredients used to make his Cloud Nine.
Reita walked to the cafeteria with his springy steps, feeling as if nothing could ruin his good mood. He had started to walk towards Uruha’s table-figuring he’d ask Uruha and Aoi to join his lunch crew again. As he walked in the direction of Uruha’s usual lunch spot, Reita contorted his face with confusion. Uruha wasn’t there!
“Oi! Dumbass! This way!” Reita heard what was clearly Ruki’s voice shouting at him and turned to look over at his lunch table. There was a moment where Reita was worried his happy mood would be beaten with a negativity stick; he had thought Uruha wasn’t at school any longer! But Reita had been right. Nothing could spoil his good mood today. His face brightening with happiness, Reita hurried over towards his lunch table that was currently occupied by Ruki, Kai, Uruha, and Aoi.
As soon as he got to his table, he dropped his bag in the seat next to Uruha. “I’m so happy!” Reita said excitedly. The sight of his friends sitting together just took Reita to an entirely different level of happiness. Reita made his way around the table, wrapping his arms around Ruki from behind in a hug. “My best friend!”
“What the hell is wrong with you?!” Ruki shouted as he tried to push Reita off of him.
He didn’t succeed in removing Reita, but Reita quickly moved from Ruki to Kai-hugging him just as he had hugged Ruki. “Other best friend!” Reita said, squeezing Kai and earning laughter in response. Reita was making his way around the table and had stopped behind Uruha. Kai and Ruki were trying their hardest not to laugh as they watched Reita hug Uruha from behind; the hug succeeded in changing Uruha’s face from fairly pale to crimson in about one second flat.
“Hey!” Aoi said, a little disgruntled by Reita’s blatant affection towards Uruha. Reita pulled away from Uruha as he heard Aoi’s voice. Reita looked at Aoi; his smile grew even wider and-dare it be said-slightly devious. “What?!” Aoi screeched and his eyes widened as he saw Reita inching his way towards him. “Oh, no! NO!”
Following the trend, Reita also attached himself to Aoi in a hug, saying, “You’re really mean to me, but I’m so happy we’re not fighting!”
“Get off of me, Suzuki!” Aoi shouted as he tried to wriggle his way out of Reita’s hold. “Don’t think I won’t kick your ass!”
Even though he didn’t feel threatened by Aoi, Reita released his hold on Aoi and picked up his bag from the seat next to Uruha before sitting down. “I’m so glad we’re all getting along! You really have no idea how happy it makes me!”
“Actually, Reita… I think the whole cafeteria now knows how happy it makes you,” Ruki answered with a roll of his eyes. Reita’s scene had seemed to attract a bit of attention, but Reita couldn’t care less.
“Don’t be silly, Reita! Of course we’re getting along!” Kai said with a grin. “Shiroyama-senpai is actually very nice!”
“DON’T,”-Aoi started forcefully, but softened his voice to a low hiss-“say that!” Sighing, Aoi added, “People might hear you and I have a reputation to keep!”
“Oh, right. Sorry,” Kai said sheepishly and stifled a laugh.
Aoi rolled his eyes and sighed exasperatedly before leaning behind Uruha so he could see Reita. “Suzuki, I have something to say to you,” Aoi said.
Also leaning behind Uruha so he could see Aoi, Reita shrugged and said, “Okay!” and waited for Aoi to say something.
“Not here!” Aoi said impatiently as he stood up.
“Oh! Okay,” Reita agreed, grabbing his bag as he stood up and waved to his friends. He followed Aoi outside to the same place they had talked when Reita confronted Aoi. “What is it you wanted to say?” he asked.
Aoi sighed while rubbing his face before he said, “Kouyou told me you asked him out on a date…”
Reita started to feel a little nervous. Aoi wasn’t yelling at him as he had done before when it came to Uruha. “Yeah… we’re just going to hang out at my house, I think.”
“I just,”-Aoi paused as he sighed again-“I just want to make sure you’ll take care of him.” Pausing again, Aoi looked to the side with a pained expression. “I can’t believe I’m saying this to someone, but I’m…” He growled, trying to force out the words he wanted to say while Reita waited expectantly. “I’m begging you! Please, please don’t hurt him.”
“Shiro-“ Reita started gently, but was cut off by Aoi.
“I’m not done, yet Suzuki!” Aoi started to scratch one of his arms, almost as if the act of sharing his feelings so openly was making him itch. Continuing, Aoi said, “He means so much to me, okay? But I can’t be for him what you can. He likes you. And I’m willing to get over that, but,”-Aoi stopped scratching his arm and his eyes narrowed menacingly at Reita-“If you do anything, ANYTHING to hurt him, you’ll need a lot of blood transfusions when I’m finished kicking your ass!”
“I wasn’t lying when I said I’d never do anything to hurt him purposely!” Reita said as he shook his head desperately. “I’m serious about this! I want to be with him!”
Aoi looked at Reita skeptically for a few seconds before he said, “Don’t fuck this up, Suzuki,” and then turned to walk away. He had walked to the end of the outside wall before he turned around and added, “You’re lucky to even have a chance with him. Don’t forget that,” and then disappeared around the corner of the building.
There was no way Reita didn’t agree with Aoi. He was lucky to even have a chance with Uruha. Reita was lucky enough to have two. At that moment, Reita was sure about one thing: there wouldn’t and shouldn’t be a third chance. He was going to take this second chance for all it was worth. And it was worth a lot.

“I feel like a fucking girl,” Reita said as he sat on his bed with his leg bouncing up and down nervously.
“Relax,” Lorenzo soothed.
“I’m going to tell Uruha how I feel tonight! How can you tell me to relax?!” Reita asked incredulously. “I mean… maybe not exactly how I feel. It might be a little weird if I told him I was in love with him.”
“Rambo, relax. You don’t have to tell him tonight if you’re not ready,” Lorenzo said, still trying to calm Reita’s nerves.
“Look, I can’t just put this off because it’s scary as fuck, alright? He should know how I feel. He deserves to know how I feel,” Reita explained. “I’ve even gotten Aoi’s approval, now! I’ve built everything up to asking Uruha out and I think it’s only fair that I tell him I like him.”
“Just listen for a minute?” Lorenzo requested. Reita nodded slowly as he sighed. “You might not be the most observant guy. It might take you a while to put two and two together. Sometimes you say stupid things, like the comment that landed you in this life.”
With each of Lorenzo’s sentences, Reita’s shoulders slumped a little more. By the time Lorenzo had mentioned Reita’s I-love-you fuck-up, Reita was feeling totally dejected and unconfident. “You’re not making me feel better at all!”
“Listen!” Lorenzo said in exasperation. “You might be all of those things, but you’re also a good guy. You genuinely care about Eugena-“
“Uruha.”
“What did I tell you about listening?!” Lorenzo scolded with a heavy sigh. “Anyway, you genuinely care for this guy. You know you messed up and you have something a lot of people never have.” Lorenzo paused for emphasis before he finished by saying, “You have a second chance. You have the opportunity do it right this time. You know how you messed up and you know what happened afterwards.”
“You’re right, Lorenzo,” Reita said, smiling a little. “All I have to do is be honest with him, right?”
“It’s obvious he likes you,” Lorenzo reassured. “I can tell he’s not going to reject your feelings. It really doesn’t take a fairy to know those things, Reita.” Reita gasped with wide eyes. Lorenzo looked at him questioningly and then said, “It’s not really a shock that he likes you at this point, is it?”
“You just called me Reita!” Reita exclaimed.
“Shit, did I get your name wrong?! I’m sorry, I meant Rambo!”
Reita shook his head as he laughed. He felt much better about tonight.
“Aki-I mean Reita! Your friend is here to see you!” Reita’s mom called up the stairs.
“Shit! I should have been down there to greet him!” Reita said as he stood up in frenzy. Turning to Lorenzo, he said, “You have to disappear! We’re going to be in my room!”
“Seriously, You need to take a chill pill! Now go!” Lorenzo said as he rolled his eyes. With a snap of his fingers, Lorenzo vanished.
Reita hurried down the stairs, hoping his mom wasn’t embarrassing him in any way. When he got to the bottom, he saw Uruha standing nervously next to his mom in the entrance hall. “Well are you going to introduce me to your friend, Reita?” his mom asked in a slightly amused tone.
“I’m sorry!” Reita said as he walked over to stand by them. “This is Takashima Uruha.”
Uruha bowed and then smiled nervously as he quietly said, “Thank you for having me over, Suzuki-san.”
“Aren’t you just the cutest thing?” his mom gushed, pinching Uruha’s cheek gently as Uruha smiled and blushed.
“Mom! Stop embarrassing him!” Reita whined, tugging on Uruha’s arm. “We’re going upstairs now,” Reita said, bowing at his mom in apology for leaving abruptly.
Uruha turned his head as he was being pulled by Reita and said over his shoulder, “It was nice meeting you, Suzuki-san,” and earned a smile and wave from Reita’s mom.
Reita opened his bedroom door and gestured for Uruha to walk inside before him. “It’s not spectacular or anything, but I like it. And I have a TV!” Reita said as he closed his door and walked over towards his TV. “So, we can watch a movie or something. Is that alright?”
Uruha blushed and looked at his feet as he fidgeted with his fingers. Reita was worried he had done something to upset Uruha, but then Uruha softly said, “It doesn’t matter to me, Reita. I’m happy just to spend time with you.”
Reita sighed with relief as he grinned. He walked around his room and gathered some pillows, situating them on the floor at the end of his bed. They could sit comfortably in front of the TV that way. He didn’t want to ask Uruha to sit with him in his bed. That might give him the wrong idea about his intentions and Reita was determined to do this right. “We can sit here and watch it if that’s alright.” Uruha nodded with a smile and moved to sit on the pillow-covered area of the floor-leaning his back against the end of Reita’s bed. Reita knelt down to look through his DVDs, asking, “You like comedies, don’t you? Or maybe an action movie?”
“Anything is f-fine with me, Reita,” Uruha answered. Reita smiled and decided to put in a funny movie. If the atmosphere were to be awkward at some point, the humor of the movie would probably help to ease the tension.
Taking a deep breath to help him relax a little, Reita pressed play and then moved to sit on the floor by Uruha. The credits had started playing and neither of them had spoken, so Reita turned to see if Uruha was all right. Reita smiled as he saw Uruha had already been looking at him. Uruha immediately looked at his lap with a blush when he saw Reita had noticed his staring. “You know,” Reita started, “I think it’s really cute when you get embarrassed like that, but you really don’t need to be shy around me.”
Sighing heavily, Uruha said, “I’m sorry. I try n-not to, b-but it’s really difficult sometimes. I don’t w-want to make a fool of myself in front of you.”
Reita smiled as he watched Uruha, who was still looking at his lap. The movie was completely forgotten for right now, because Reita felt there was something more important than a movie. “Uruha,” Reita said as he gently reached for Uruha’s hand and laced their fingers together. “Can you look at me for a minute?”
As soon as Reita had grasped his hand, Uruha shifted his attention to their hands. Hearing Reita’s request, he slowly looked up towards Reita’s face. Reita smiled adoringly at Uruha and he said, “There is nothing you could do or say that would make me like you any less, Uruha.”
Uruha, with cheeks flushed from Reita’s comment, bit his lip to try and stop his smile from showing how happy he truly was. Scooting a little closer to Uruha, but not letting go of his hand, Reita said, “Uruha, I want to tell you something.”
His smile faltering slightly with nervousness, Uruha nodded and said, “I’m listening.”
Reita knew this was it-the big step. This was the moment that would make or break his second chance with Uruha. This was the moment that would determine whether he would cross the line of friendship over into the realm of more-than-friends or live a life knowing he fucked up both chances with Uruha.
Taking a deep breath, Reita then looked at Uruha and said with as much confidence as he could manage, “Uruha, I really, really like you. Every day I can’t wait to get to school, just so I can talk to you. Every time you smile it motivates me to try and make you smile again, just so I can see you happy. I love seeing you happy. You make me feel so happy, Uruha. And I just want you to feel the way you make me feel. And that’s what I wanted to tell you.” Reita continued looking at Uruha, trying to gauge his reaction. It was difficult to judge how Uruha felt about Reita’s confession, because Uruha was just staring at Reita with wide eyes. Okay, maybe he was a little shocked?
“Um,” Uruha said as he broke his eye contact with Reita. Reita watched as Uruha started to tug on a loose string on his pants. This wasn’t good. This wasn’t good!
“U-Uruha? Is something the matter?” Reita asked with concern and nervousness.
“You… you said it didn’t matter if… if I made a fool of myself, right?” Uruha had asked softly. He lifted his gaze from his lap so he could look at Reita. Uruha added, “You’d still feel that way?”
Reita furrowed his brow with confusion, but nodded at Uruha and said, “Of course.”
“I r-really hope so, Reita,” Uruha responded. Reita was still very confused by Uruha’s behavior, but his eyes widened with surprise as he noticed Uruha leaning in closer. It almost seemed to Reita like Uruha was about to kiss him! Would he do that? No, he was too shy!
Apparently Uruha wasn’t too shy to make the first move, because Reita felt those soft and familiar lips press against his timidly. It was one of the sweetest kisses Reita had ever had.
And of course one of the sweetest kisses deserved to be interrupted. Reita couldn’t tell what Lorenzo was saying to him, but he could tell he was saying something at a time he should have been letting Reita enjoy. Reluctantly, Reita pulled away from Uruha and opened his eyes.
He had expected to see Lorenzo hovering in front of his bedroom door. Instead, Reita opened his eyes and saw nothing but white. He saw nothing but Lorenzo hovering over the white floor of a completely white-and completely empty-room.
Reita shouted, "Where the fuck am I?!"
