ok first watch this
http://www.mtv.com/videos/movie-trailers/598272/young-justice-exclusive-trailer.jhtml Ok, now that I assume you have watched the video or at least are pretending to have watched it I can begin. This is the trailer to the new Young Justice cartoon movie. For those of you that don't know, Young Justice was a super team of teenage super heroes in the DC universe. Mostly comprised of Justice League sidekicks, Young Justice served as the Teen Titans for the next generation. I was in that generation and as such it was near to my heart.
Young Justice was one of the first comics that I, as a kid reading comics, picked up from the first mini-series and was incredibly excited when it became an actual ongoing series and collected it from the beginning. This was a big deal to me. To put it in perspective most comics you read are on say the 268th issue or something when you pick them up because hey you like Green Lantern. Even if you have Green Lantern #1 it's not really Green Lantern #1 it's most likely Green Lantern Vol. 3 #1 meaning that it is actually the third time they have had an issue number one for Green Lantern. So anyway it was a big deal to me, it was a comic for my generation that actually survived. I read a lot of issue number 1's of comics that didn't make it past issue 12.
So, back to the trailer. First you see Robin, which is perfect, Robin is one of the first three members of Young Justice. Next who do you see? SPEEDY!! Fucking Speedy, not that I have a problem with Speedy, but he was never fucking in Young Justice! He was in Teen Titans, he had his kid adventure days and when Young Justice was formed he was a solo hero by the name of Arsenal. So already I have a problem with the lineup and the blatant disregard for where the series should fall in the already blurry DC timeline. Next who do you see, Tempest! Again, WTF?!?! Ignoring the fact that like Speedy, Tempest was never in Young Justice you again are completely screwing with time. Tempest was Aqualad, he became Tempest much as Speedy became Arsenal (and even later Red Arrow), and Robin (Dick Grayson) became Nightwing. It's perfectly sound for young sidekicks to grow up and become their own heroes but is he his own hero yet or is he still living in the shadow of Aquaman like the rest of the teenage heroes? Then you see Kid Flash, notably not Impulse who should be the speedster. Arguably it could still be Bart Allen since he later took the mantle of Kid Flash, but I'm skeptical.
Finally we get a glimpse at the storyline which is ok, revolves around the grow ups leaving for some fight, which needs to happen, then the kids break into Project Cadmus to find a clone of Superman, hence Superboy. This is somewhat reasonable, but I do have problems as the essence of Young Justice was 3 next gen side kicks Robin (Tim Drake), Impulse and Superboy coming together and becoming friends because of their commonality which is living in the shadow of someone with the same powers of you.
So the lineup, if I'm not mistaken is Robin (Tim or Dick who knows?), Speedy, Tempest, Kid Flash (again like Robin it's unclear if it's Wally or Bart) and finally Superboy who they're most likely going to have to convert to the side of good and then teach to become a hero.
To sum up my problems with this
1) Is it Young Justice or Teen Titans? Seriously this makes a big difference to me. Cause the lineup, with the exception of Superboy is pretty much the Teen Titans. Unless they clearly define Robin as Tim Drake (the third Robin) and Kid Flash as Bart Allen (he became the 4th Flash) THEN IT'S FUCKING THE TEEN TITANS NOT YOUNG JUSTICE!!!
Young Justice was three heroes that not only have their elder super heroes to live up to, but previous side kicks. Tim Drake is not only in the shadow of Batman but also knows he is the third Robin, not only that Batman also had Batgirl, so he has a lot of people's shoes to fill. Bart (Impulse) Is the second kid flash, but the first kid flash became the third Flash and if that weren't enough to live up to the second flash is his grandfather and the current flash is his cousin. Bart knows someday he will have to become the flash (flashes have a short shelf life) and even resists donning the yellow and red costume of the first kid flash for fear of not living up to it. Not only that, but the current Flash even went as far as to name another speedster as his successor, not Bart so that's gotta effect your self confidence. Lastly you have Superboy who has the biggest shoes of all to fill. Superman, the greatest and most loved super hero of the entire planet. Robin has the luxury that people don't expect him to become Batman, people expect Impulse and Superboy to become the Flash and Superman.
2) Tempest... Oh the problems I have there. #1 is he's black. Tempest is an Atlantean and as you can clearly see with Aquaman, Atlanteans are not black. #2 he's blonde! Atlanteans view blonde hair as a bad omen and Aquaboy had black hair. Arguably his hair is bleached, but that's worse. If you grew up in a society where blonde hair was considered a crazy birth defect why would you bleach your hair?
3) Again if you wanted to make a Teen Titans movie then why not just call it that?
