Author's Notes: Written for the lost_femmeslash Fic Battle with the prompt "hiking." I'm actually quite sure this was one of the prompts I submitted, but... Yeah.

She's not a caretaker, but she's felt like one ever since she boarded that bloody freighter. Naomi was distant and professional and the rest of them (not including her, Frank, Miles, and Daniel) were more of the same. Frank she liked. He had a fatherly air about him that she could cling to if she needed to. Miles she didn't... Not much anyway. He was positively a lout and, really, all she wanted to do was hit him most of the time.

And then there was Daniel, the reason why she suddenly felt like a caretaker. She wasn't pushed into that role. If anything, he needed someone to ground him since he wasn't really all there, and her better instincts were replaced with oddly maternal ones. If it was love, she didn't think about it.

Now that she's on the island, however, things are different, and hiking through the jungle with Kate on some mission to the barracks so that they can retrieve Miles (and get what she came for, but she won't reveal that), she's suddenly blissfully aware of what it feels like to be around someone who doesn't need her to take care of them. Daniel was her primary alliance on the freighter and while she certainly spoke to the others, it was Daniel she was closest to and while she did care about him, she was always a woman who could take care of herself and she respected other people who took care of themselves as well.

She won't admit it, but she has a lot of admiration for Kate and even when the two of them stop to fill their water bottles in the stream, flushed from the heat of the day and kneeling across from each other, she doesn't say a word about it. Merely abandons her bottle and wades across the shallow water in order to capture Kate's lips in hers. Kate only resists for a moment and Charlotte quickly forgets that she's kneeling in cold water and that her legs are going numb.

If this is love, she doesn't think about it. It just feels good to kiss someone who doesn't need her so much.
