arthoniel, who wanted "Katara and Toph talking about Aunt Wu's prediction for Katara's future husband." The Tokka just snuck in there. Really. *whistles innocently.*
"Toph, do you ever think about marriage?"
"I try not to."
Katara sighed, struggling to find the best way to bring this up. It was a question that had plagued her since leaving Aunt Wu’s so long ago. (Had it really been that long? It felt like an eternity.) She’d never had a girl to talk about it with before and while Toph wasn’t much of a girl, she was better than nothing.
"What’s on your mind, Katara," Toph sighed, catching her hesitation through the vibrations she felt through the earth.
She toyed with her hair nervously. "It’s just... I’ve been thinking about what happens after the war. I’m going to want to settle down and have a family, and..."
"And?"
The words suddenly tumbled out of her mouth without restraint fueled by a sudden impatience to get them out into the open. "And before we met you, we met this fortuneteller who told me that I was going to marry a powerful bender, but the problem is that could be anyone."
Toph massaged her temples. "Katara, I don’t know much about this, but I’m not sure you should invest your entire future on something some batty old fortuneteller tells you."
"Why not?"
"Because... We make our own futures. Look, my mom dragged me to a fortuneteller once. She told me I was going to marry a powerful captain or something. Look at me now. Do I look like some captain’s little trophy wife?"
"It could still happen though," Katara shugged.
"Well, yeah, but not unless I want it to happen, not because some fortuneteller told me it would happen." Toph paused, suddenly thoughtful. "Do you have a particular powerful bender in mind?"
Katara blushed as she suddenly thought of Aang, and she was thankful the blind girl couldn’t see it. "Maybe."
Toph shrugged. "Well, there you go. If you want him, go and get 'em. Your future doesn't happen with you sitting on your butt and waiting for it to fall into your lap, Katara."
"Hey, ladies," Sokka suddenly chirped, venturing into their campsite, looking particularly proud of himself and bringing their conversation to a standstill. "What’cha doing?"
"Umm... Just talking girl stuff," Katara flustered. "Um... I need to go see Aang. Is he back?"
"Yeah, he’s down that way a bit, doing a little scouting." Sokka jerked his thumb behind him and Katara leapt to her feet, trotting off in that general direction while her brother watched with a confused look. "What was that about?"
"I have no idea. I don’t understand girls who aren’t me," Toph muttered, poking through her things to find her canteen. "So how’s the war planning going?"
"Amazing," Sokka beamed, plopping down in front of her. "Guess what?"
"What?" Toph asked as she discovered her canteen and took a healthy swig from it.
"Dad just put me in charge of one of the divisions of our army. I’m going to be a captain."
Toph instantly choked on her water.
