Inaguration Day

Jan 20, 2009 10:01

I did not watch the 2005 re-inaguration, or whatever you call it. However, I do remember eight years ago. That Saturday morning it was raining in DC and people threw eggs at the limousine as it made its way to the mall. I remember thinking “This is really happening?” I believe it was Bush’s lack of a clear victory in 2000 that started the schism in this country, 2004’s narrow win further divided us.  Of course if the Supreme Court ruled 5:4 for Gore it would have been just as divided. However, I was a fan of both the peace and prosperity of the Clinton administration, so I would have been the Gore version of my sister the Bush defender.

I have to believe that what Bush did, he did because he felt it was in the best interest of the country. I just disagree with his tactics, not his intentions. I believe his intentions were good.

This morning in DC it looked beautiful out, not a drop of rain and all I could think is “This is really happening!” But that’s me, uber liberal: let gay people marry, legalize stem cell research and mandate fuel efficency. Our country is still incredibly divided. I can only hope that the dire situation we are in will force all parts of the political spectrum to work together. I can accept that issues that are important to me may have to be set asside for a while so that we can deal with the crisis at hand. Obama winning does not mean that conservatives have to step in line and march to our tune; I didn’t step in line to Bush’s. I hope that our government can reach true consensus, and not just dictate the democratic agenda. If we do that, our country will to continue to fracture.

obama, hope, bush, politics
