political thoughts

apartment_5 recently asked people to post three reasons why they are leaning towards a specific candidate...I wrote it and even spell checked it, so i decided that i will also share with those of you who do not know him. (PS: apartment_5 = the coolest, check him out)

1. I do not agree with the Republican Party on a moral level. I believe the socially conservative have commandeered the party to preach exclusion and to limit freedoms. Fiscal issues could sway me. However, the amount of money we spend on a war that no one has been honest about does not make me view them as the fiscally responsible party. Regardless, the party's stance on issues like gay marriage, the environment, stem cell research, abortion or the separation of church and state pretty much ensure I will not vote for a republican candidate.

2. In 2000 I liked John McCain, he presented himself as a maverick, as someone that was more interested in doing what was right as opposed to what was popular...and Karl Rove ate him alive. Now he seems, to me, as a man that was bitten by the system and has decided to play the game and do what he needs to get elected. Things like criticizing the president, but then having him on hand for a fundraiser where the press is not allowed to be present struck me as bullshit and two-faced.

3. I believe that, if elected, Barack Obama would signify to the entire world a radical change in America’s leadership. Not only is he someone that excites bitter or apathetic individuals to participate and get excited, but he is also someone savvy enough to know how to work with and speak to a younger generation. A generation that will need to take over the reigns of government from a constituency of voters that checked out after Bobby Kennedy got shot.

I like his energy policy, we have spent too little on gas compared to the rest of the world and need to change the way we think about a dwindling resource.

I like Obama’s foreign policy agenda, the president should not be afraid to negotiate with world leaders. I would also hope that includes our friends as well as our opponents, the only way we can leave Iraq without it descending into chaos is to get the support of other nations to assist with shepherding it so American soldiers are not there alone.

I like Barack Obama. I like that he is someone that is honest about his missteps and even admits to shortcomings (he is a smoker) that any other candidate would not let the world know. I believe that he would start a needed change in the direction that United States is currently headed.
