A/N: here, have a multi-chapter fic! I'm vaguely certain of where this is going and how it is going to end, but I have yet to write everything down. I thought about writing everything first, but then decided against it because then I wouldn't ever want to post it…and even though I have little faith in my writing, I really like my ideas for this one. please to be letting it take the place of Away :P because I don't know what's going to happen to Away anymore. just because this starts out on the road does not mean it will always be like that-don't worry, it'll be different from how I wrote Away, mkay? and also, this is an AU fic, and it is set in 2012 because I wanted Taemin to be at least 18. don't ask me why. crappy title is crappy, I know, lol. anyway, I'll try to have chapter 1 up within the next 2-3 days.
Prologue
(Taemin; April 30th, 2012)
The radio is humming what Americans call their oldies. Taemin knows them, though; everyone around him knows them by now. This is the only station they've all agreed on, and even then some of them revert to their own business. Jay, the driver, and Taemin are usually the only ones actually listening.
He sticks his head out the window of the van, fingers pressed into the lip over the edge of the sill. Taemin feels free this way, like he's flying down the road. He sits back down and lets Jonghyun close the window when Jay says, "Highway soon." Jonghyun sits next to Krystal again, but she doesn't look up at him. She's reading, ignoring everything else around her. Over the course of this trip, Krystal seems to have taken up a thing for reading poetry. Today is Anne Sexton.
Taemin sits back and reaches for his necklace, hanging where it should be. The guitar pick is so thin, he could break it with his small, fragile fingers, but he never would.
In front of him, Kyuhyun and Jino are playing cards with Jungmo, or at least, they're trying to. Jungmo is in the passenger's seat, next to Jay. The three of them are attempting a game of something-or-other (Taemin can't be sure, because he isn't really following what all three are saying), and Jungmo has to practically sit backwards to play.
They're somewhere in a place called Pennsylvania. That's what Jay said ten minutes ago, and that's also what Krystal said ten minutes ago, and if they both agree, then it would have to be right. To Taemin, Pennsylvania is just a tiny bit exotic; one tenth awesome. The other parts of awesome contribute the the fact that the seven of them have nearly trekked all the way across the approximate 3,000 mile span of the United States, in a used van that came painfully close to dying just outside of Las Vegas.
"Just a few more hours," says Jungmo. Everyone knows that the words are for Taemin, so no one else responds but the youngest boy.
Taemin cracks a smile immediately, like a reflex, and their eyes connect until Jungmo goes back to his game and Taemin continues to gaze out the window. Green life stretches for miles and miles out here on the road.
When Krystal puts her book down, it's a sure sign of a growing headache inside her pretty mind. Taemin reaches for her, patting her shoulder for a quick moment. Little wisps of hair fly around her eyes when she turns to smile at him, a small smile between friends. She is beautiful; she makes a lot of boys do a double-take, triple-take, whatever-take, but Taemin isn't really in love with her like other boys are. They turn separate ways, and Taemin returns to the window, staring.
A green sign: 250 miles to go.
"Almost there," he mutters, forehead resting against the glass.

I'm not from Pennsylvania…I've only driven though one part of it before, so pardon me if you think I made any mistakes about my neighbor state.
