A/N: The AU for this is the same that I'm doing for one of the fics I'm writing for troisbang . SiMin, however, is not part of the OT3 (well, OT4) of that fic, but I got this idea because I like messing around in its world.

Shoelace

They limp across the threshold, into the dark abyss of their apartment. Sungmin first, Siwon after, the keys dangling from the former's tired hand. He sets his guitar down right after the shoes come off, laces tripping him just a little - but Siwon's got his back. Stabilizing each other's stances and knowing exactly when to do it, here's a good reason for them to stay together.

Siwon switches on the lights, and it's just then that Sungmin sees the damage that's been done. Conveniently, he's standing by the only mirror in this tiny box of a living space. He rubs some of the blood off his own cheek with the back of his sleeve and realizes that it's not from a cut, his face is free from those. Just a bruise forming on the other side and-is that a black eye?

"Are you alright?" Siwon asks, taking off his shirt because, well, it's already got about five holes in it - three of which were gained this evening. His eyes are on Sungmin, primping the liquid redness away from his face. "You look pretty bad."

Sungmin uses the mirror to make eye contact, but then starts to look down. "Other than the usual," referring to the abs, "you look pretty bad, too."

"How'd we even get out of there?" Siwon sort of marvels at the fact, looking down at his shirt. The black piece of clothing looks so much more pathetic when off his body.

"I know martial arts," Sungmin's eyes wander again, "and you've got muscles. Bigger than mine, at least."

"Now's not the time to joke, hyung, we could have gotten arrested."

"But we didn't, Siwon, we're okay."

"Your face almost got bashed in, but we're okay," Siwon growls.

"You're the one sporting a black eye, and look, you got three more holes in that shirt I bought you - and I only bought it three weeks ago!" Sungmin throws his hands into the air, then wincing and bringing the left back down, cradling it with his right.

Siwon drops the sad shirt. "What? What's wrong with your arm?" he comes closer, hand reaching for Sungmin, who gently bats away the concerned limb.

"It's nothing, just sore, nothing, nothing. Fine, I'm fine," it's becoming his mantra now. Especially when Siwon ignores him and holds down the hand pushing him away, especially when Siwon starts to inspect the other arm. "Siwon, stop, I'm--"

Siwon gives him a look, and even though Sungmin's always been better at the don't do that, stop it, stop it now look, Siwon nails it and Sungmin stops struggling. He lets Siwon look at the slash in his sleeve, and what's underneath.

"Wow," Siwon sucks in a deep breath, almost at the same time as Sungmin, but for different reasons. One in shock, one in pain. "That's…that's…"

"Someone in the crowd had a fucking knife, and they sliced my arm instead of a cop," Sungmin groans.

Siwon puts his arm back, gently. "That's it, no protest concerts for a few weeks."

"What?" Sungmin uses his good arm to grab Siwon's shoulder. "We can't just cancel, Heechul's already got us a gig for this weekend, Siwon, we can't just-"

"How are you supposed to play with your arm like that?"

"So it'll hurt, so what? I've played through hours of pain, fingers burning, this is exactly the same, and I can do it!"

"Come here," Siwon doesn't give much of a warning other than this, and drags Sungmin into his arms. He doesn't say much afterwards, but he feels Sungmin giving up under his grasp already.

Later, after they've dug up some bandages stowed away in the crummy sink cupboard, Siwon offers to help fix up Sungmin's arm. And Sungmin doesn't say no. Just doesn't say yes, either, and Siwon simply takes it as one.

Sungmin bites his lip to say no to the pain, and keeps his mouth closed this way. Siwon kisses his forehead every few minutes like a timer until he's done and Sungmin's patched up. It's when they switch places in the tiny closet-space of a bathroom and Sungmin's in charge of fixing that they speak again.

"I lost a shoelace," Siwon laughs, and Sungmin's hands pause.

"Someone took your shoelace?"

"Yeah. In all that chaos. And I still have my wallet."

If there'd been a mirror available, Siwon thinks that Sungmin might've been smiling. But his eyes are facing the tiles under his bare feet.

"Of all the things to take…"

"I know, right?"

They can laugh about the situation now. Rowdy underground clubs or outside concerts that end in violent riots - goddamn police - their life since the declaration of war has never been the same. It's been hard, it's been bloody now and then, but they haven't changed otherwise.

Hours after the fact, Siwon is still shirtless and bandaged where it matters. There's a Spongebob band-aid on his collarbone. And Sungmin wakes up at 4am on his bad arm. There's blood on the sheets, from the obvious pressure of his own body. Siwon's arm is around him, he shifts when Sungmin sits up and hisses at the biting feeling around the outside of his elbow, and then they're both sitting up.

"What's the matter?"

Sungmin shudders and glances at the body at his side, the one curling the arm further around him. "This is never going to get anywhere," and Siwon knows he's not talking about them. The two of them. We. Us. That's not what he means.

"Don't say that."

"But it's true," Sungmin leans into him, head on shoulder. "We're not doing anything. There's no end in sight, Siwon. We're on a treadmill, we're--"

"Hyung--"

"--not going anywhere. The ground's moving but we're in the same place, all of us. What else can we do?" Sungmin feels the tears moments later, when Siwon's larger, warmer hands are on his face.

"It's almost done," Siwon says. "It is." This violence, he means.

Water is hard to see through when it's dark. Sungmin still finds Siwon's face. "But you don't know that."

He pauses, takes away the salty trails on that pretty cheek.

"I don't."

My mind's been on Across the Universe and The Beatles for the past few days. I guess this AU would make more sense when you read what else I've got written for it, but that's for the ot3 big bang, so not yet. Or if you've seen Across the Universe (part of my inspiration).
