I am sometimes struck by how much coverage Newsweek gives autism. In the past four years I can remember at least three cover stories about autism. The most recent one explains a lot of what the place I am now working for is facing. As kids with autism grow up, parents need to find programs for their kids. When they turn 21, the educational funding stops, and the parents are left to figure out how to provide care during the day. The group I am working with faced that problem in an interesting way. When they started, it was with 5 kids, who were young. And then they grew up, which meant they needed to expand the program to include group homes. And when they turned 21, they made a vocational program. Now they teach job skills as soon as the kids enter school.
At any rate,
this Newsweek article is worth a read. Or at least I think so.
