This month was HEAVY! I was sure that I couldn't complete the objective on February but in the end with a last spur in the previous days I could watch 10 movies this time too ^^ Yey for me! And yey for Shige who stated in the calendar and in the last Myojo that he's keeping up with the movie project this year too. A new motivation for me to do my best!
The boat that rocked (30.1) & Due date (8.2)
Favourite two movies of the month.
The boat that rocked became one of my favourite movie ever, I guess. It talks about an underground radio station in the 60s' London. Just when rock'n'roll was at his best period (The Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Who, just to name some groups...) in England it was illegal to broadcast rock music via radio, that music was considered indecent and rebellious so the government tried hard to repress its expansion on society. The underground radio station where forced to work out of English territory, that's why in that period there were naval stations, the boat that rocked is exactly one of those radio's ships and the movie tells the story of its staff and of their battle against the law. The characters of the movie are all adorable and peculiar and of course the movie is dipped into a wonderful 60s rock soundtrack. Watching the movie I found again my roots, which are in that kind of music and that kind of spirit since I was just a kid. It moved me and made me laugh, I totally fell in love with it. I recommend it to everyone, even if the only music you ever listened it's pop, because it's important to know about music's history imho.
Due date is a brilliant comedy with Robert Downey Jr. (So it worths to watch it even only for him *slapped*). Anyway, it's really funny. Sometimes he falls into a too predictable, dirty comedy but there's a nice plot and exquisite characters and actors. Really enjoyable.
A country doctor (12.2) & Chonmage Purin (27.2)
I put those two movies together just because they're the only two Japanese movies I watched this month :D They're totally not related.
A country doctor is a animated movie based on a Kafka's short novel. It's completely and purely unsettling and creepy. Well, for those who knows Kafka I think they can image the atmospheres of the story, adding to that a dark style, scary voices, disturbing drawings and Japanese weirdness, it's easy to image how it is. I don't know if I recommend it, it's impressive for the picture but if I didn't know already the novel I wouldn't have understood a bit of the plot. It may be interesting if you study animation.
Chonmage Purin was adorable *w* Yasubei's character was perfect for Ryo-chan, I've always thought that he's really "Japanese" and samurai-like. The kid was cute, the love story was cute, the cakes were cute. All was fuwafuwa basically. I also cried a little in the middle of it, but I was pretty tired and emotionally unstable so I'm not sure it was for the movie LOL
And now for something completely different (13.2) & Moulin Rouge (24.2)
Two old movies.
I've already watched the first in the past, I've seen it again at my friend's house and since I was a little behind with the movie project I keeped it on my list. Anyway, it worths to talk about it. I think that everybody at least once in life must see a Monty Python movie. For those who don't know about them, they are a group of English surreal comedians of the 70s. Basically a large part of what comedians do today comes from them. I think that Monty Python are something that you love or hate. Personally I love them, they always make me laugh. Well, if you're interested watch this or "The meaning of life" or "The Holy Grail" ^^
Moulin Rouge...ok, I admit it. I've never seen it before. I don't even know why since I'm a big fan of musical. I just didn't :D I loved it of course. I like Ewan McGregor and the soundtrack was wonderful. Oh and the costumes and scenaries too! *-* I'm glad I finally watched it.
Everybody's fine (17.2) & The King's speech (28.2)
Two serious movie.
Everybody's fine is with a perfect Robert De Niro. It's pretty sad, it talks about this old man who is ignored by his children who are now grown and live far away from him. They don't want to see him and they lie to him everytime so he just decides to do a US tour to go visit them. It's depressing because we must be honest, we all do the same with our parents or grandparents, and it's so pitiful to see a dad so lonely and upset because of the behavious of his kids. It makes you think. Recommended.
The King's speech just yesterday won 4 most important Oscar prizes so I thought it was important to watch it, don't you think? I was expecting for a boring movie anyway, it's an historic movie about English kings so don't know...it wasn't really inspiring. I was wrong, it's a very good movie and it deserves the prizes. The plot is a true story and it's interesting and unusual, Colin Firth is an amazing actor. Even in the slower moments I never thought it was boring. Congratulations for the Oscars and for this good movie.
The tourist (17.2) & Love and other drugs (28.2)
The tourist had great promises, it has Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp, but as all the movies with many huge stars it was pretty disappointing. The plot wasn't that interesting and catchy, the actors were of course good but don't know...even with all the action scenes I still thought it was boring and confusing. As Italian it was funny though because of our actors spread here and there in the movie :D
Love and other drugs is a very typical love comedy. There's Jack Gyllenhaal. Period. LOL Ok it's an enjoyable light movie, it has some dramatic moments too but as every love comedy it has its happy ending. Oh, there's Jack Gyllenhaal anyway, did I say it already? XD Sorry, he's too hot that he was distracting. XD
