Kato Shigeaki-sensei
Saturday 7 April, TBS 21:00, "Blackboard". Kato Shigeaki challenges his first role as a teacher!

What did you think when you read the script?
It was extremely interesting. I felt drawn in. It's entertaining but it's also a drama that brings a serious, important message about adults and kids nowadays. It's an honor to be in it. It may also be a good input to get to know the real situation of education. I think that even middle school students may gather something from it.
There are many young teachers like the one I'm going to play, possibly in the same situation. Then, my part is like the entry of the drama, that's why I have to properly express the educational scene.
Takizawa-sensei, played by Matsushita Nao, will expose and face an important matter, I want to play conveying a right image for a teacher while I keep up the thrill of the drama.

How it is to play the role of a teacher for the first time?
After all it was something I wanted to do. Being one of the kids of Kinpachi-sensei. It's something that I couldn't even dream of back then. I'll do my best to not bring shame on Sakura school students (lol).

Did you ever want to be a teacher?
I kind of like teaching things to other people. I mean, I would like that but I guess it's hard. It's about human relationships so it may bring you a high satisfaction but it's also a difficult job. Also because I'm really shy (lol). Thinking about it now I realize how awesome my teachers were.

Was there a teacher that influenced you the most?
There are a lot. A lot of teachers I'd like to meet again. My main teacher in the 3rd grade of middle school never deserted his students, he was amazing. In that school it was forbidden to dye your hair but I did (lol). He didn't scold me, he was only disappointed, he told me "Kato-kun, I wasn't expecting this from you...". His expression was so sad. You wouldn't want to see your teachers sad, would you? I will never forget that.
Then my Japanese teacher in the 3rd year of high school! He gave me a hanamaru* for an essay about Japanese expressions. If it wasn't for him maybe right now I wouldn't be a writer. It was the first time I was praised for something I wrote, I didn't like to write that much back then but of course I liked to be praised. After that my grades in Japanese went up and I started to enjoy writing for real. It all connects to my present.

*A hanamaru is the equivalent of a gold star award :3 Look I got one too yesterday!

Well done! :3

If you became a teacher what would you teach?
Maybe Japanese? If I were a Japanese teacher I think I would be one on the cutting edge. Because my grades in Japanese were really bad (lol). If I were to teach I'd like to do it in a weird way. I often have problems and I don't care too much about what are the feelings of the writer (lol). I enjoy more to see how everybody understand the text in a different way. I'd like my novel to be one of the topic. It'd be great!

Tell us something more about the drama.
I will be an assistant teacher loyal to rules in the modern era. Thanks to Takizawa-sensei, played by Matsushita-san, I will somehow change. Not only me, also the students will change thanks to her. To see in which way this will happen you have to watch the show!

Some memory about a "blackboard"?
I was really good at wiping the blackboard! When I was on the day duty I always admired how beautiful the blackboard was. It was my pride. I think that when people asked me what was my special talent in middle school I answered "cleaning the blackboard" (lol). I miss doing that~ Anyway I sucked at writing on it. That would be another ability, right? I always got dirty. I hated to do that. I just liked to wipe it.

Shigeaki-sensei gives a report card to NEWS members! (5 levels)

Japanese: 3 (Koyama) - 4 (Massu) - 4 (Tegoshi)
Maths: 2 (Koyama) - 4 (Massu) - 4 (Tegoshi)
Science: 1 (Koyama) - 1 (Massu) - 2 (Tegoshi)
Society: 5 (Koyama) - 3 (Massu) - 2 (Tegoshi)
English: 2 (Koyama) - 5 (Massu) - 4 (Tegoshi)
P.E: 5 (Koyama) - 20 (Massu) - 20 (Tegoshi)

Koyama would have a 5 in society, right? Because he's a newscaster. But he's not good with kanji, so a 2 in Japanese...no, he's working on it so I'll give him a 3. I never saw him even once doing a calculation (lol). He's the type who pays without even looking at the bill.
I feel that Tegoshi should be between 3 and 4, maybe he should work harder? You know, 5 is equal to 100points. He doesn't watch TV so a 2 in society and science. He hates insects but he said he got used to them thanks to locations. He can also talk a proper English (lol).
Massu gets a 1 in science, because he hates insects. In English...maybe a 5. He listens to a lot of western music. But I never heard him talking (lol). I appreciate his love for English. About Japanese, he never reads books...Ah, but he writes lyrics. I like his songs so I'll give him a 4! Then, a 5 is not enough for Tegomass in P.E, a 20 to them two!
