ENGEKI BOOK - Cross-talking ShigeXJoushima

-Joushima-san what brought you to come back to theatre after 15 years?

J: It was the right time. Sometimes you just don't get the chance, this time it came well and with a good story, just later I realized: "Right...it has been 15 years"

-For Kato-san it's been only 2 years but this is your 2nd time.

S: Looking back at my first time 2 years ago it was a good, rich experience, it has been a turning point for me. I've never played in such a comedy before, even in dramas, so honestly I'm nervous. I don't know how to make people laugh, how to make them feel moved. I want to experience many things with the rehearsals, I think that just that it's worth doing.

-You already read the script, I guess.

J: It's been 15 years that I didn't read a script for a play, everything felt new. Reading it I could image the scenes, the more I read the more interesting it got.

S: It gave a warm, lively impression.

-There's a mysterious lady, there will be suspence?

S: I don't think there will be too much. There are many hints, I think people will understand things quickly.

J: It's not an heavy story. It's just a family who gradually gets together once again, with a comedy touch.

-The two brothers are parted also by age, right?

S: I'm a guy of 23 years.

J: I'm his 38 years old brother. I'll try to lead the reunion betweent the two brothers...kinda (lol). Everybody is a little broken, everybody has his own mysteries, it's interesting.

-How it is to work together?

S: It already happened in a scene of "0 goushitsu no kyaku"

J: We didn't even exchange a line though. We were in the same scene but didn't talk, it's an odd tie. It was inside the story where Kato-kun was the main character. There I watched him on the monitor and I was moved by his play. He read the script in a very normal way. It'd difficult to overcome the images of it. When he did I was surprised and said: "That's a good part! It makes me wanna cry!". Did you heard this?

S: Yes (lol). It made me happy.

J: Not because of our relationship of senpai-kouhai, I thought it was amazing as an actor, as a man. This time too I don't see him as my kouhai when we are on the stage. It's me who feels the bigger pressure there, I must do my best because I don't want to stand on the stage and think: "That's bitter!" (lol)

-Did you know the works by G2?

J: I did. I watched "Jail Breakers" with Matsuoka for example.

S: "Girlbert Grape" with K8's Maruyama-kun was by G2 too.

J: I don't know how he is during rehearsals though, I'm worried. Who knows, maybe ashtrays will fly (lol)

S: He seems really kind. I asked to Maruyama-kun (lol). He said that he spend many time listening to all you have to say and that he directs with lot of care.

J: You already control tightly your role, huh?

S: No no (lol)

J: Kato-kun will also be the story teller of the play, then he will have to come back to the character. I think that he has the hardest role.

S: No, everybody has an hard part.

J: Because we must control our shape too. It's been 15 years that I'm not under such a rigid schedule, because of course we must be completely ready for when the play will begin. We can't catch colds or something like that too.

S: On the opposite I feel very good in such times. Because I always keep a clear schedule. Anyway having to go to rehearsals and learn the script at the same time is really difficult.

J: I don't know if I'm fast or not at learning the lines, anyway I haven't memorized them yet (lol)

S: The previous one was a translated play, it had lots of difficult words so it was really hard. That's why I memorized everything before the rehearsals.

J: Eh, really?

S: Because it was my first time. This time I think that things will change during the rehearsals so maybe it's better to not fix them too much inside your head.

J: The others in the cast are veterans, I can't really imagine how it will be. But when I read the script for the first time I could imagine how it will come out somehow.

S: We won't know until we'll try.

J: Anyway I'm sure that the script is a good one. When I finished it I said: "That's good! So interesting!". At the first sight you could see it like a picture.

S: G2 is able to make the images from his writing come out very clear.

J: Reading it you felt like you already watched it (lol).  Then you realize: "Oh, we still have to do it" (lol)

SHIGE'S WORDS FROM NYLON

The contents of the play are serious but there are many stupid scenes, often there are parts in which you smile just because in reality under that there's suffering. It's  syrupy but it's not a story that makes you want to avert your eyes.

There were many points pretty far from reality. It's not only comedy and laughters, there are many moving scenes too...The main point is that this one is a story 'possible' because it may happen in every house. I'm still not used to real plays though (lol)

Me and Joushima-san are both only children, maybe it will be interesting also because of this. I've always wanted siblings, I hope I'll be able to play the role of a younger brother well. There are scenes in which we'll fight, I'm not really good with fights. Even when I'm irritated I just keep it inside of me. Even though it happens that I want to face the other and fight (lol). I want to express this in my character too.

Two quick (rushed) interviews from the magazines who starred Shige...since the play already began and I think many of you read reports I think it's kinda pointless to do these interviews where they still had to begin the rehearsals (lol). Anyway I wanted to translate them :3
Enjoy!
