It seemed to him that his life was lived in the shadows. There had never been a time when the beckoning caress of them hadn’t welcomed him back like a long-lost child.
When he was growing up, he lived in the shadow of his fathers and the men who had gone before him, making him push harder and strive longed, but always hidden in the velvet black of shadows.
At school, the shadows were his ally, keeping him safe from scrutiny and the brutality of anyone who might take exception to his natural gifts. He honed them, but never to draw attention to himself.
It surprised no one that his career was one borne of subterfuge. He became gifted at hiding in plain sight, often right under the nose of the enemy. It made him more dangerous than anyone knew. He learned of the horror hidden in shadows.
“Hey.” Illya’s voice pulled him from his thoughts. Napoleon looked over at his lover. Here was a man who also thrived the dark and, with love, had pulled Napoleon back into the light. “Is there something wrong?”
“No, everything is very right.” He kissed Illya and smiled. No more shadows. Not now.
