Mrs. Slocombe didn’t mind having to work for a living. She felt she had a definite flair for sales.

“I think we need to splurge.” One customer held up a nightie. “I mean, a shower at her age.”

“Who’d have thought she still had a chance,” her friend answered.

“I couldn’t help but overhear,” Mrs. Slocombe swooped in. “When is the happy event?”

“They haven’t pinpointed the date yet, but soon.”

She’d been training for this her whole life. “How lovely that she’s found a safe shelter. Will it be a white wedding?”

“Wedding? Let her have the kid first.”
