Title: What are you Doing New Year's Eve?
Genre: Despicable Me, Minions
Rating: G
Prompt: Will you be my New Year’s kiss?"
olden_fan, Merry Christmas. I hope you enjoy this bit of nonsense! Thanks for being part of it and my thanks, also to
nursesparky for her beta.
Agnes sat in front of the Christmas tree, her brow furrowed in thought.
“What’s wrong?” Edith, constantly hungry, was snacking on a sugar cookie. It was the only way to keep her out of Santa’s batch.
“I gotta trouble.”
Edith made a rude noise. “How can you have a trouble? You’re only five.”
“I can have troubles.” She wanted to be brave and show her sister she was a force to be reckoned with, but even standing up, she wasn’t taller than Edith.
“Did you tell on someone?”
“No.” Agnes studied her fingers. “Not today.”
“Did you spill anything at the table or push the wrong button in the lab?”
“No.” Edith didn’t need to know about the beaker of silly juice that she broke. It took the giggling minions nearly an hour to clean it up.
“What do you have to worry about?”
“New Year Eve kisses.”
“What?” Edith made a face at the mere thought of it. “That’s gross.”
“You kiss Gru.”
“That’s different. You gotta do that. It’s part of our contract.” She picked up a pair of nunchucks.
Then she was gone and Agnes was none the wiser for her sister’s advice. She got up and headed to their room.
It was Paradise compared to what they had had at Miss Hattie’s House for Orphans. She still had nightmares about the Box of Shame and of having to sell cookies. Of course, if they hadn’t, they never would have met Gru and been given a home.
She loved Gru and gave him kisses on a regular basis, even without knowing about the contract clause. But this kiss… it had to be different.
Margo was on her bed, texting one of her friends. They saw less and less of their oldest sister these days. She was so busy with school and with her friends. So was Edith. Agnes couldn’t wait until she was old enough to go to school.
“Margo?” She waited for a moment, then tugged her sleeve. “Margo?”
“Hey, sweetie.” Concerned clouded Margo’s face as she studied her baby sister. The mothering instinct kicked in. “What’s wrong? Are you sick? Do you need Lucy or Gru?”
“No. Can I come up?”
“Sure.” To Margo’s credit, the phone was set aside and she focused her full attention on Agnes. “What’s wrong?”
“I have an issue.”
“An issue?”
“Uh, huh.” She looked around and leaned closer. “I don’t have anyone for my New Year’s Eve kiss.”
“Sure you do. You have me and Edith, and Gru and Lucy.”
“No, I mean, my special kiss.” She sighed. “The one that changes everything.”
It took Margo a moment and then she remembered a movie they were watching a few nights earlier. A tragic moment, a last goodbye to what was, and never another chance to say what was unsaid. The only thing that saved the young couple was a kiss at midnight.
“You know that was just a movie, right?”
Agnes was fiddling with her fingers. “It is?”
“Well, sure.” She brushed Agnes’s hair back. “First off, have you ever seen a donkey that can talk? Or a cat with a fancy hat?”
“No.”
“Or a giant gingerbread man?”
“No, although it would be sorta cool.”
“You’re right, it would be. Why are you worried?”
“So, if I give my friend a New Year’s Eve kiss, it won’t change him?”
“Not at all.” Margo kissed Agnes’s forehead. “I think I saw him in the kitchen, staring at the turkey.”
“That’s Ralph.”
“I thought it was Bob.”
“No, the turkey’s name is Ralph.”
“Oh.”
“He’s waiting to see what sort of clothes Lucy is putting on him.”
“Clothes?”
“She said she was going to dress him.” She sat up. “Maybe I should go see if any of mine would fit.”
Margo smiled. “You do that!”
Agnes climbed down and headed for the kitchen. The house was a blur of activity as minions hurriedly finished their last-minute Christmas chores. She walked by their dining room and a chain of ferocious-looking minions indicated she should move on.
The kitchen was dark and empty, except for a small pool of white cast by the refrigerator light. Bob was sitting in front of the appliance and studying the contents.
“Bob?”
“Agnes!” Bob jumped to his feet and ran to her. He dragged her to the refrigerator and gestured, “Ta da!
The turkey was wearing one of Gru’s sweaters and a scarf. Agnes smiled and nodded. “He’s very handsome.” She started to fiddle with her fingers again. “Bob, can I ask you a question?” Her brow furrowed again and she could feel a tear welling up, terrified of a negative response.
“Plumaki.” Bob stood by her side, his face unhappy.
“Will you be my New Year’s Eve kiss?”
“I’d ko da verlo mimo eko traigo.” He hugged her. “Obe yambrr."
“Pinky promise?”
“Pinky enfur.”
“Do you want to go count lightbulbs on the Christmas tree?”
“Si, si!”
Hand in hand, they skipped out of the room, then Bob hurriedly returned to shut the refrigerator door. This was going to be the best holiday season ever!!
