casey28, I hope you enjoy for story. I had fun writing it. Thanks for playing along and thanks to nursesparky for her beta.

Mele Kalikimaka is the thing to say
On a bright Hawaiian Christmas day
That's the island greeting that we send to you
From the land where palm trees sway

The Doctor slowly moved his straw around in his glass. His banana daiquiri was quickly losing its appeal, even as his ice was melting.

Donna came up, cheeks red from wind and sun. “Isn’t this great?” She sat down and signaled the barkeeper. “It’s sunny! It’s warm! It’s--”

He looked at her over the rim of his sunglasses. “Christmas.”

“What’s wrong?” She paused to order a drink. “I thought you wanted to be as far away from London as possible.”

“I did. Well, from your mother, more than London. It’s just not right here. I miss the cold and the snow.”

“When was the last time we got snow in London? I mean, a proper snow and all… without the killer Santas?”

“Come on. As a treat, I booked up a nice beach cabana.” She lifted her drink to him and he nodded.

“I just…” He sighed. “You’re right. Here’s to you. You’re a good mate.”

“Ta, Guv.” She laughed and downed her shot. “Come on.”

The Doctor had to admit that the cabana was nice and it opened right out onto the lawns, the green, green lawns and tropical flowers and palm trees. He couldn’t understand why everything felt so wrong.”

“Is that what you are wearing?” Donna asked as she exited the bathroom. “It’s not very festive.” She was wearing a lightweight green top that highlighted her auburn hair. Around her neck was a necklace of small Christmas lights.

“Please don’t tell me that they light up.”

She touched a small switch and they turned on. Her grin was huge. “Okay, I won’t, but they do.” She pointed to a shelf. “Did you notice the decorations?”

“The cranberry candles and artificial pine boughs? I did.”

“It isn’t much, but at least it’s something. Are we going somewhere?”

“We are. We are going caroling. The local choir is gathering in the lobby and we are going to sing Christmas carols and watch Santa arrive.”

“I’m really not in the mood.”

“You never are, so we are going to change that.” She handed him a hanger. “Get changed, Skinny Boy.”

Too tired to complain, The Doctor did as asked and reluctantly followed her to the lobby of the hotel. A few folks had gatherer about a group of women. They were wearing brightly colored mu’u mu’us and backed by a huge evergreen tree decorated with poinsettias.

He nodded and smiled at a few of the guests as Donna disappeared. She reappeared a moment later, holding a sheet of paper.

“What’s this?” He dug out his glasses. “The Twelve Days of Christmas, Hawaiian Style?”

She gave him ‘the look’ and turned back to the singers.

He didn’t mean to. He didn’t want to, but five minutes later, The Doctor was fully involved in the concert, laughing and singing along. He was enthusiastic about the Twelve Days, even though he didn’t understand much of it. He and Donna sang along and when it was time for Santa to arrive, via a double hulled boat, he was right there to applaud and greet him with a cheery wave.

He watched the hotel staff’s children line up to tell him their Christmas hopes and dreams, then walked back to their cabana, arm-in-arm with Donna.

“No, you can’t tell me you didn’t have fun.”

“Yes, well, it was the moment.”

She unlocked the door. “Well, hold on to your hat because there’s more. I’m taking you out to dinner tonight, so get into something casual and we’ll paint the town.”

“Where? How?”

“Christmas magic, old son.” She laughed and then stopped. “What’s on our beds?”

Each bed held a brightly colored Hawaiian fabric stocking. It was filled with a piece of fruit, a package of macadamia nuts and a chocolate bar. “Mele Kalikimaka from us to you,” Donna read out aloud. “How fun!” But her face grew sober as she watched The Doctor sit down heavily upon his bed, still holding the stocking. “Doctor, what’s wrong?”

“I’ve… I’ve never had a stocking before. Not one of my own.”

She smiled and gave him a hug. “Come on, dinner waits for no Time Lord.”

A combination of food, drink and song had whisked away many of his misgivings, but he still felt a bit melancholy. Donna, on the other hand, was laughing and joyful.

“What a great Christmas Eve,” she said as they toppled into their room. A sudden noise next door told them that they had guests. It had been empty when they left for dinner.

“We should go next door and wish them a Happy Christmas.” Donna grabbed a bottle of wine that she’d purchased earlier for just such an occasion. “Come on.”

“I don’t know.” He tried to hold back but knew he had no option. Reluctantly, he followed her just as she was knocking.

The door slowly open and a figure filled it. “You rang?”

Donna’s eye grew round, but The Doctor laughed. “Lurch? Is that you?”

“Doctor,” he rumbled and turned aside. The bungalow which should have been just like theirs was trimmed with black and purple bunting. The lights were low and the music was akin to nails on the blackboard.

“Lurch, if that’s the maid, tell her--” The man speaking stopped and laughed. He removed the cigarillo from his mouth and said, “Why, bury me alive and call it a party. Morticia, look who’s here.”

“Who?” A reed thin woman glided forward.

“Exactly! It’s The Doctor and his companion… Rose, is it?”

“That was two companions ago, I’m Donna.”

Gomez bowed to her. “Any friend of The Doctor’s is a friend of ours.”

“Do you know everyone in the world,” she asked The Doctor.

He laughed. “Only the ones worth knowing. Donna, I want you to meet Gomez and Morticia Addams, two of my dearest friends.” He hugged Morticia warmly. “Now it is Christmas.”

“Well, we are trying.” She turned back to the room. “Fester has taken the children out to scour the beach for jellyfish. Grandmamma has a new recipe. You’re just in time to help us trim the tree.”

Donna looked worried, but The Doctor pushed her forward. “Oh, we brought this for you.” She offered the bottle to Gomez.

“Excellent!” He held it out. “Lurch, something for the punch.” The butler took it and disappeared into the bathroom with it.

“What are you doing here?” The Doctor asked.

“We were on our way to the Wa’ale’ale Swamp when our plane had engine failure. We’re forced to wait here until it’s repaired.” Morticia opened a box and lifted out a small guillotine and hung it lovely in a branch of the needles-less pine tree. She offered the box to Donna, who picked out a skeleton.

“Oh, you selected Mortimore. We pick him up on our honeymoon.” She reached out to stroke Gomez’s cheek. “Do you remember, mon cher? The catacombs, the rats? Tres amore.”

“Tish, that’s French.” Gomez tossed his cigarillo over his shoulder and grabbed the woman to frantically kiss up her arm. “More, Tish, more.”

“Gomez, we have guests.” Morticia’s voice was warm, but firm. “Later tonight, on the lava.”

“Right, so here we are stuck, so we decided to make the best of it.” He pulled another lit cigarillo from his pocket and began to puff away. “We thought it would be horrible, but now, here you are!”

“Here we are…” Donna pulled out a bat. “I’m feeling sort of tired, so I might.”

“Nonsense, the night is young. We are young. Well, some of us are young.” He tapped The Doctor’s chest. “You my friend, are the poster child for the long lived. Just like my great Uncle Vlad. I swear that man never ages.”

“Doctor…” Donna tried to take a step towards the door, but The Doctor cut her off.

“I know that they seem a bit eccentric, but you will never meet a more loving family. Roll with it, my girl. It’s Christmas.”

“Since when are you in such a jolly Christmas mood.”

“Since I realized that Christmas isn’t about where you are as much as who you are with.” He took a sip from the punch glass Lurch offered him. “Delicious!”

Donna took a skeptical sip and looked surprised. “It is good if a little odd, a bit like these folks.”

“They aren’t odd, Donna, they’re family.”

A shout from the lanai heralded the arrival of Fester and the children and The Doctor couldn’t remember a time he’d been happier.
