Please, let it go...

So, on Friday night, we went up to Sacramento (saw lots of flooding on the way up) to see the Musical Frozen.

I had seen bits and pieces of the movie and I hope the musical was going to be better than what we actually saw. I give them high marks for their tech and I loved the way they did the snowman and the reindeer, but the songs were lame and forgettable. The voices, while good as a whole, were amped much too loud and the lead actresses’ voices were shrill and made my head ache. Staging was horrible (I hate the latest trend of people running back and forth across the stage for extended periods as a way of building excitement). Costumes, with the exception of the puppets, were from the movie, so no real credit from originality there.

The show-stopping number was Let it Go and there was probably close to a million dollars’ worth of technology on that stage and they used all of it. It closed the first act and was, sadly, the highlight of the entire show. However, the kids loved it and the stuffed reindeer and snowman toys were flew out of their little shop. It was the first time I’d seen a longer line there than at the ladies room, both during Intermission. They were both probably running about $50 a piece and most of the little kids were carrying one, if not both of them. One thing Disney knows how to do is make money.

It was better than some of the stuff I’ve seen presented as the ‘holiday’ show, but paled in comparison to some of the other Disney productions. That said, there was not an empty seat in the theatre (which seats about 4,000).

I guess you can say that when it comes to Frozen, I let it go.
