Oooh, the food sounds good. Where are you staying/eating?
Don't forget I'm just down the road (60 miles or so) and I'd love to meet up if you have time in your busy schedule.

We're staying at the Hotel Portmeirion and are on the American Plan, so we have breakfast and dinner included in the room charge. That sort of limits us to where we eat(either here or the castle). Still it's only for a few nights and the food is very good.

Considering how long it took us to get here (driving wise), I don't think we will be going much farther than Porthmadog or the Snowdonian park. I thought it was be much faster driving, but with these narrow roads - eek.

Don't worry, you get used to the roads. :D

There's still plenty to see without too much driving. Harlech Castle is just a short drive from where you are. Snowdonia is wonderful for walking (I like the area around Capel Curig) and a hike up Snowdon itself will only take you half a day - or you can always take the train to the summit! Then there's the steam railway at Blaenau Ffestiniog. Beddgelert is nice - do you know the legend? It's a nice run along the coast to Criccieth and Pwllheli, or you can keep going to Aberdaron at the very tip of the peninsula. Caernarfon isn't far, nor is Conwy, Llandudno and the Great Orme.

The Big Guy hasn't stopped talking about the train to the summit, so I suspect we will go that route. There's also a slate mine around here that he is crazy to see. I don't know the legend about Beddgelert, but I bought a book on supernatural Wales, so maybe it's in there.

Thanks for the suggestions.

You have perfect weather for taking the train up Snowdon, so I'd definitely give that a try. Slate mines are ten-a-penny around there, so you'll have no trouble finding one, and if you get as far as the Great Orme (the headland near Llandudno) they have Bronze Age copper mines that date from thousands of years BC. Definitely check out Beddgelert - it's a pretty little village and the legend is so sad! I'm sure the hotel staff can help you out if you need to know how to get there.
There is so much to do in that area. Give me a shout if you need ideas.

The weather really couldn't be nicer, although I was honestly hoping for a little rain. Oh well, nothing you can do about the weather.

We did the Llechwedd Slate Caverns and it was interesting learning about how they mine and recover slate. It has been going on at this mine since 1838. Low ceilings made for slow walking at times, but it was interesting and a nice morning out. The Big Guy really wanted to see this one, so we did.

Tomorrow we will do Snowdonia National Park as we decided not to rush stuff by trying to cram too much in - that's for the cruise!

Appreciate the offer! Thank you!
