I once made meat cake for my dog's birthday. It was actually quite edible (I even took a slice as the main course for my lunch). I would put this in the fine medieval tradition of illusion foods and am almost tempted to make it for something like an office party. Not vegetarian or dairy free, but the no gluten, no sugar people could eat it. Except that aerosol cheese - yikes!

I'm sure your dog loved it! You are a good person to make him his own cake.

Let's hear it for aerosol cheese!

It was the one and only time I made anything special for an animal. I have no idea what possessed me. I now have sliced meat (not balogna) and cream cheese on my shopping list. I have everything else already except the aerosol cheese, and will make do with regular cheddar sliced into curls. If it works out, I promise to post a picture.

Excellent. I have to admit I like honey ham with a thin layer of cream cheese on it, but only now and again! Good luck!

Oh dear, it is pretty early in the AM to think about Bologna cake! Thank goodness I was not drinking the night before :-D

My God, it's... it's BEAUTIFUL!

But how do you keep it from sliding around while "icing" it? And cutting into it seems like it would create quite a bit of sliding as well..

SO MANY QUESTIONS!

I was wondering that myself. It would seem to need something down the middle to keep everything in place.

Yeah.... unless maybe the cream cheese mixture gets kind of stiff?

Looks like I have a lot of work ahead of me in the Captain Slinky Test Kitchen :/

The ranch dressing might stiffen it, but it needs to be soft enough to spread. perhaps refrigeration is the key.

Good luck in your test kitchen and do let us know the results! :D

I would be SO ANGRY if I walked into a party, thought this was a cake, and then found out it was bologna and cream cheese. It seems like it would be hard to make but maybe once you make some progress it's alright. Like, if you're going to serve bologna, fine, but don't trick me into thinking it's a delicious cake!

I'm with you, although I would question its position on the buffet table. With entrees, I would think there was more than met the eyes. If it was with desserts, I would be pissed (and not in a good way, either).
