(r)evolution in TV watching

I just can't remember how we watched TV, lets say 30 years ago.
If we watch a 1h30m movie today we'll record it on HDD first, so at least we can skip commercials. But then there is the pause button, which can be used to get a drink, get some food, go to the toilet, let in the cat, look at the child if she's sleeping well, let out the cat,... So the time we save on skipping the commercials we loose on pausing the movie for other activities. 30 years ago we couldn't pause the movie, but we also didn't need to skip commercials! If we needed a toilet break we'd rely on others to fill us in on what we missed.... kinda like seeing it in the theater.
My last two trips to the US were with British Airways and more of the same there. We used to not bother try and watch a film on a transatlantic flight as we'd have to look on a screen far away in a difficult angle,... then we changed airliner as United had small LCD screens in the headrest in front of us. Then they added 5 different movies to choose from and now BA has interactive movies so you can watch 1 of 12 movies whenever you want and also pause it whenever you want... or play poker over network with other people on the plane.
What's next??
