potter potter potter potter....

Ha ha! Well, I didn't get The Book Friday at midnight, although I did swing by to check out the... madness.
It was pretty calm and comfy for Madness. Lots of people in mild cosplay (ie, a cloak or a hat), a few in full cosplay, talking and milling about and sometimes waiting in line. Though congenial, it was more crowded than I preferred, plus the wait looked to be long, so I didn't stay and instead retrieved The Book on Saturday.

Horray!

Wheww, mostly all I have to say is that was great!. Seriously. Fantastic.

Snape was about as I'd expected (except I thought he'd do something grander and more heroic in The End to save Potter). Anyway, I figured he was working for Dumbledore all along, and had been ordered to kill D. But, Snape's motivations were very interesting, and I hadn't guessed them at all! I love that he remains a somewhat ambiguous character... extraordinarily brave and resourceful, tragically in love, and yet helping "the good guys" not out of any moral preference for "good" (indeed, his own preference seemed to be for Evil) but only because the one he was so in love with happened to be on the anti-voldemort side.
I was really sad he died though, out of all the characters (besides Hermione) I was hoping he'd pull through!

But yeah, awesome book. I can't wait for the movie ;D So epically epic!

I do have a gripe though. Not with the main book itself, but with the "19 years later" chapter. Talk about an anti-climax! It served no purpose except to say who the (incredibly obviously going to happen) couples named their children after :P That's nice and all, good to know they were able to have a relatively happy and "normal" life and all that.

But.

Perhaps I'm "projecting" on the kids too much, but I would have prefered to know that, while indulging in a bit of domestic bliss, the characters were still having adventures. Hopefully not of the increadibly dire "I lost half my friends and some body parts!" variety, but still fighting to make the world a better place. I mean, they've been the kind to go find trouble, to help where help is needed, when trouble doesn't go finding them first! Furthermore, I was really, really disappointed to see no mention of what happened with all the other non-human races. One moment they're all collapsed together post-battle, we have an inkling that maybe understanding and relations will improve, then back to business as usual. One wonders if perhaps, while they weren't outright persecuted as they would have been under Voldemort, the old status-quo has been restored and nothing has changed.

*tempted to make a fan-rewrite of the last chapter, adding in a few bits of dialogue to say what the adults have been up to in the past 19 years aside from breeding, and putting a few elves, goblins, etc on the train to Hogwarts. Perhaps Rose can have a goblin best friend for Ron to give dirty looks and Hermione to punch him for doing so! ^-^
