With the recent production of movies based on books by Dr. Seuss, and specifically the bomb of The Cat in the Hat (shame on you Mike Myers....honestly, it's a CHILDREN'S BOOK!), I think a closer look should be taken at the kind of message we want to send kids. Dr. Seuss was a man with a plan; he wanted to send out political and moral messages to children and the general public in a very simple and yet, clever manner. My dad has always said that Dr. Seuss was a great way to learn how to read because each page contained a new word, and repeated all the other words you had seen in the book (e.g. One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish). But, Dr. Seuss, if you have read some of the more complex stories, contains some pretty powerful messages. I remember watching a special on Seuss on Family Channel where the story The Lorax was animated and re-inacted. Now, there's a story that could possibly be made into a movie and contains a message that kids could absorb and take away. Basically, the message is anti-consumerist, and pro-environmentalist. True, majority of society is not necessarily receptive to such messages, but everyone knows who Dr. Seuss is, and really, as long as Brian Grazier doesn't produce the film, it could be good. It certainly has more meat to it than Cat in the Hat -- how exactly did they think they could drag that out into and hour and a half??!! Seriously, read The Lorax, and tell me if it doesn't have potential.
