[Kira jumped slightly, startled from her reverie as her phone rang in her pocket. Glancing at the caller ID, she picked up immediately.]

[Lazard doesn't answer, but a tinny conversation can be heard between him and someone else.]

--ient, then what are you, Jenova? A spurned experiment lurking in the ruins of Midgar?

Ah, we are much more than that. Perhaps you should do some research... or Hojo will know. Perhaps... or he might have been too consumed with his love for experimentation to figure it out.

[A large burst of static rips through the sound and when it clears Lazard's speaking. His voice is tight with effort.]

--o die in the shadow of the ShinRa Building, ha...haha. What are y-you...going to do?

[Kira froze as she heard the name Jenova again. The voice that spoke after him nearly made her drop the phone - after only hearing the voice in her head, hearing Jenova speaking aloud, even through a bad phone connection, was frightening. If the...whatever she was...had a body and was communicating with Lazard...

Her train of thought derailed abruptly as Lazard spoke again. There was pain in his voice; she had heard that strained way of speaking a million times before.]

Director, where are you!?

[As she spoke into the phone, she ran across the apartment, digging through her bag for her materia bracer and grabbing the weapon that lay beside it. If he was in Midgar, she could get to him quickly enough on her chocobo, stabled near the apartment building... The WRO soldiers stationed near the building could keep Hojo safe for a short while.]

You will not die here, that we guarantee. You will suffer as our cells infest you, but death is far from you. We have our uses of you. We will hunt. We will finish what we came here to do so long ago. The time comes soon.

[It took Lazard some time to lift the phone up and talk after Jenova's parting words.]

Kira? I... The ShinRa Building... Send someone. I'll...be going into shock soon.

[She was already entering the code to lock down the apartment when Lazard spoke again.]

I'll be there as soon as I can, Director.

[Still keeping the phone to her ear, she ran out the apartment, sending soldiers to the door that she had just left as she made her way out to the street. The chocobo stables weren't far. She would be in time to save Lazard, and possibly confront Jenova...

...not that that possibility made her feel any better.]

[He nodded, more to himself than to her, wadding his coataround where Jenova had stabbed him and attempting to apply pressure himself. Hopefully...she hadn't damaged anything vital. Her claim that he wasn't going to die just yet wasn't very reassuring.]

Haha...I was...afraid you wouldn't pick up. I hope I'm not...interrupting anything--important?

[On the back of her chocobo, Kaori, Kira headed out of Edge, still on the phone.]

Nothing I wouldn't put off to come help a friend.

[She made her way quickly through the ruins of Midgar, searching for a way to the plate. The chocobo found a way when she could not, heading quickly toward the ruins of the Shinra Building.]

I'm almost there...

[He tried to take steady breaths of air, forcing himself to remain calm.]

Where she-- Keep an eye out. ...She might still be...around.

[The last thing he wanted was for Jenova to find Kira as well, though Kira had surely come prepared. And had the sense to run if things took a turn for the worst. Hopefully.]

[As the broken bulk of the Shinra Building towered above her, Kira continued to glance around her; she didn't need his warning to be careful when Jenova was still potentially in the area. Before long, she spotted Lazard, lying on the ground, and urged Kaori on, leaping from the bird beside the former director. Muttering, almost to herself, she rolled back her bracer sleeve and prepared to cast the spell.]

Ow...she really did a job on you, hm? Nothing a little magic can't fix. Cure.

[Watching as the green light spread across the wound, she nodded once.] Is that better?

[Eyes fluttering behind his classes as he struggled to keep focus, Lazard struggled to sit up a little straighter. The feel of magic running through him, closing the wounds Jenova had inflicted, was reassuring. It appeared he wasn't going to die today.]

Yes, thank you, Kira. [He looked up at her chocobo with a laugh.] You certainly were fast. I apologise...for the unexpected call.

[As Lazard tried to sit straighter, she reached out to support him, keeping her eyes on his wounds as he healed. As they closed, she sighed in relief.]

No problem. Couldn't let you die just after you came back, after all.

[Lazard gladly let Kira support him, rather shaken. It had been an exciting week so far...]

Haha, I believe you're the only person who would think that Kira. [He took a breath and forced himself to stand on weak legs.]

...I guess this just goes to show, don't think a corpse is dead even when you have the cadaver. Is there somewhere relatively safe around here? Midgar seems to have fallen on tough times.
