mother-daughter time

I discovered a very relaxing statement, to repeat from time to time: It is OK to be not OK.

My mom and I are cleaning the house together.  It will be a breath of fresh air n'stuff!

I like my mother's take on Judaism (which applies to many other religions as well, but we were talking about Judaism), that it is like a beautiful diamond, with many many facets.  You are given the diamond, and are free to relate to any facet of it, secular or non-secular, that catches your eye (such as music, social action, Tradition, beliefs, ethics, history, storytelling, identity, Israel, cuisine, etc. etc.), whichever facet can be what you like about Judaism, can be your experience of Judaism.  No facet is particularly better than another, and you can relate to whichever one/s you find meaningful, and other Jews will relate to ones that are meaningful to them.  Then you give the diamond to your kids, and they can choose which facets appeal to them, too.

I like that image, I think it covers a lot of very different experiences of this ridiculously multifaceted culture/religion/identity/thing.

Anyway.  Back to dishes!

family, religion
