So, I figured after posting twice to Lim's LJ I might as well post on mine too...
The last two weeks have been RIDICULOUSLY riddled with events, some awesomely cool, some not all that cool whatsoever.
The focus of the two post to Lim's account where on Lim's manic episode, which actually sucked for everyone else around him more than it did for himself. In that way, maybe I should have just posted those last two entries to my LJ, as it was definitely affecting my life just as much as his. :P
Anywho, I've been super stressed out and exhausted for the last two weeks (I know what you're thinking..."Emily, stressed and out of energy? Impossible!" I swear, it's definitely possible.), so I've been unable to be properly excited and happy about the good part of the last two weeks! Me and Lim got engaged! I'm feeling much better now that Lim's basically out of his episode. I figure I'll talk about the positive first, 'cause it's more fun to talk about. ^_^
One night (I’m pretty sure it was a Wednesday, which would make it the 13th of February) me and Lim where just talking about random crap as usual (I don’t even remember what the conversation was on right before he did it) but suddenly out of the blue Lim basically said, “You know, I should have done this a long time ago.”
And I’m like, hmm? What’s afoot? Then he gets me up off the couch, positions me in the middle of the room (no one else was there) and totally proposes to me using my keychain with my keys still on it as the ring! It was definitely perfect. A couple days later we went to this outdoor market called Camden Town Market (at this point we were still in London) and looked around in all the jewelry stalls for the perfect rings. Lim wanted an engagement ring too, so I bought his and he bought mine. The fanciness didn’t matter - we just wanted them for the symbolicness, and I certainly didn’t care what mine was made out of as long as I thought it was purty. ^_^
He picked out a plain but shiny silver band for himself (don’t actually know what it was made of :P) and I picked a silvery ring with silver leaves and four little dark stones. Then, we went to this shop called Muffinski’s to exchange rings officially. It was a little coffee and tea house that specialized in its collection of muffins. It’s motto was “Muffins to Remember,” so we thought it was appropriate. ^_^ We split a banana-caramel muffin (delicious!) and a bowl of potato leek soup, and then we exchanged rings. So awesome!
I don’t think I’ll bother you with the gory details of Lim’s manic episode, but I’ll try to explain the conclusion. It got bad enough that the doctors in London recommended either hospitalization or coming back home, so we went home. I of course thought it was more important to help his through this than finish my own semester far away in London. We’re back in the States now, and we’re both just going to chill for the rest of this semester. We both have enough credits to still graduate next year as planned, but we might take a fast track course starting after spring break in order to be considered full time students for this semester for insurance/tax purposes.
Lim episode is basically all the way over. He’s probably still technically in the recovery period, so we’re still making sure he relaxes and sleeps enough and such. Episodes can be triggered by too much stress or not enough sleep, so we’ll basically always be trying to make sure to get enough rest and relaxation, without going to the point of limiting our lives in any significant way. Once you have one episode, you’re considered to have bipolar disorder for the rest of your life. Once you have one episode, there’s a 60% chance of having another within 1 or 2 years, and a 70-90% chance of having another one in 3 to 5 years.
Most likely, he’s going to have more episodes. That’s basically just inevitable. We’re all hesitant for him to take preventative medicines right away though, because most of them have livable-but-annoying side effects. Depending what the doctors recommend when we do a follow up, he might go on a preventative medicine regime for up to a year. If there’s no more problems during that year, then he’ll slowly go off the medicine and just see what happens after that.
So it sucks of course (yeah, maybe I’ll tell a fuller story of the actual episode later), but it’s not the end of the world and the disorder is treatable. We’re playing it by ear for now, but truthfully most people with this disorder really need medicine to function to their full potential. We don’t really know how the disorder is manifested in Lim yet, so we don’t know how much it’s going to affect him throughout his life.
Everyone’s optimistic, though. ^_^
