Instead of the cross the albatross about my neck was hung

Thanks to: Jenny (soujiokita), Kelli (stormantia), Holly (lonely_firefly), Gina (cadenza354) and Jacob (lystellion), as well as Raul, Lynn and Elaine, id est those losers who don’t have LJ.

I suppose I’m doing better. The Friday-invoked angst has subsided, although the resulting panic attacks have not been pleasant. I do believe I have developed a mild case of not misanthropy but rather anthrophobia. Anyway, I can deal with it. I suppose that’s always the key.

Tomorrow is academic awards and Grease, which I have to say I’m looking forward to, for all I kind of really dislike the musical in itself. Then I work Saturday and Sunday. So yes, I need to enjoy my Friday while I can.

Tonight my goal is to finish my The Sound and the Fury essay. Strangely enough, my greatest issue in writing it is trying to keep myself politically correct. You’ve got to understand: Faulkner is southern gothic and this novel was written in the early 20th century. They use the word “nigger.” A lot. So, when I refer to said race, I obviously can’t, and don’t particularly want to, call them “niggers;” however, “African American” sounds stupid and civil-rights-y, “colored people” sounds flat-out stupid and “negro” is apparently not politically correct anymore. I’m tempted just to say “black” but I’m pretty sure that’s offensive also. I don’t know why. I get called “white” all the time.

Anyway, The Sound and the Fury. Stylistically gorgeous. Quentin’s section is so pretty it makes me wibble. Y’all should read it. Because the third chapter opens with this line: Once a bitch always a bitch, what I say. Seriously. The hilarity of Jason Compson makes the book worth it.

So, while we’re on the subject of literature (I am such a nerd) I must say that Coleridge’s Rime of the Ancient Mariner is amazing. Like, some of the lines make me shiver with how well they’re written, which is impressive because I typically dislike Romantic poetry. Wordsworth, on the other hand, can shove it. Ugh.

life: reality, +literature, life: friends, feelin' like: introspection
