[fill] Where a Great, Warm Welcome Will Be Waiting for Me (Part 3/4) anonymous October 4 2012, 12:15:26 UTC
Peter grins and as he pulls the blankets tighter around himself and drifts off, he hears the two of them murmur good night and close the door.

*

When he wakes up, he feels infinitely better, although he doesn't particularly want to get out of bed, yesterday's bruises and fatigue making themselves known in his sore muscles. He groans and tries to slide as painlessly as possible out of bed, leaning against the wall while he rubs sleep out of his eyes.

It takes a second, but once he's actually awake enough for his brain to begin processing data, he hears the commotion from downstairs. The sound of raised voices drifts up, punctuated by the odd clap of thunder. Considering that the skies had been clear when he fell asleep, this probably means that someone has gotten Thor riled up, and that takes dedication: Thor is about the most easy-going guy that Peter has ever met.

He goes to investigate.

"…listen Stark, LA is not New York, the people here just aren't used to the super-villain level damage that the average New Yorker is. On a mission like this one, you really could have done yourselves a favour and tried not to cause quite so much collateral damage. Our PR department is going to be dealing with the fallout from this for weeks, not to mention all of the rebuilding projects we're going to have to spearhead…"

He reaches the landing and finds Clint is already there, crouched down and peering between the posts of the bannister to get a better view of the conversation happening in the living room. The sniper sees him and beckons him over, rolling his eyes in exasperation when Peter shoots him an inquisitive glance. He mouths 'Fury' and offers a 'what can you do?' kind of shrug as they both turn back to where Tony is on a video call with Nick Fury and Steve is pacing moodily beside him.

"Director." Peter is slightly taken aback that Steve is the one to interrupt Fury's diatribe, usually it's Tony who enjoys sniping back and forth with him for hours on end. "With all due respect, sir, we handled the situation to the very best of our ability and prevented far more damage from occurring-"

"I appreciate your efforts, Captain Rogers, however-"

"No, you listen, Fury," finally, Tony steps in. "There was nothing we could have done. We saved the damn city, while sustaining not insignificant damages to members of our team-"

"Your team. You realize how the media is going to spin this, don't you? You were seen cooperating with Spider-man, a wanted vigilante," Fury steam rolls Tony's undignified noises of outrage and doesn't seem to notice that Steve's hands are clenched into tight fists. He also doesn't notice Bruce, in the back of the room, taking deliberate, slow breaths in an effort to remain calm.

Peter looks guiltily at the floor. He knows that by associating with him, the Avengers have put themselves in a difficult position, it's not hard to do the math on that one.

"They're going to demand that someone take accountability for the damages, and if one of the Avengers hides his face behind a mask, how can he possibly be trusted? How is he being held accountable? Every time the Avengers fight alongside a vigilante like Spider-man, you compromise the mission, you alienate the people you signed on to protect. How can the citizens of the world trust you when-"

The audio and video feeds die abruptly as a power surge causes the lights to go out. Visible by the combined light of Tony's arc reactor and the stars outside, Thor sticks his head out from the door to the kitchen. He has an almost devious grin on his face.

"I apologize, friend Tony! It appears as though, once again, I have failed to comprehend the inner workings of one of your Midgardian appliances! And right in the middle of your communition with the Director - most unfortunate!"

Tony tries, but can't quite hold back the gleeful smirk spreading across his lips. "What appliance was it, Thor?"

"The toaster, shield brother! I may have attempted to use Mjolnir to summon the power required to toast those delicious popped tarts you were kind enough to purchase on my behest."

Standing beside a laughing Bruce, Natasha simply raises an eyebrow dryly. But even she can't prevent her lips from curling into a small smile.
