Dear Avengers Fanfic Writers:
It is well known that I can't stand comprehend Loki fans. I have, grudgingly, come to accept the viewpoint that Marvel Universe Loki is not the Loki of Norse legend. Fine, whatever. But there are times, like now, when you have to picture me with gritted teeth and steam coming out my ears from sheer incoherent ....aaarrrrrggggghhhhhh...
I was just scrolling through the recent fics at AO3, like ya do, and of course there are a lot of holiday fics posted these days. As I skimmed summaries, la la la, my eye lit on the following summary: "Loki learns about the tradition of mistletoe."
*SKREEEEEEEEEEEEEETCH!* Let the rant commence!
FOR SWEET FRIGG'S SAKE DO YOUR FUCKING HOMEWORK! IF THERE IS ONE THING YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT LOKI -- OR MISTLETOE -- IT'S THAT LOKI IS A CENTRAL CHARACTER IN ONE OF THE WORLD'S MOST ANCIENT LEGENDS ABOUT MISTLETOE! HE BLOODY WELL KILLED BALDUR WITH MISTLETOE! IF YOU WANT A LOKI-AND-MISTLETOE STORY THERE'S A PROMPT FOR YOU! YOU WANT ANOTHER PROMPT FOR LOKI WITH MISTLETOE? MISTLETOE IS SUPPOSED TO PROTECT YOU FROM LIGHTNING! AS IN THOR!
How can so many of you know about the give-birth-to-a-horse thing and not know this? The most cursory compilation of legends of Loki has the mistletoe thing front and center. The most cursory compilations of mistletoe lore has Loki front and center!
Author, I am very sorry. I'm sure you're a wonderful person, and I'm definitely a horrid bitch, and going off like a steam-spitting volcano about this is downright cruel. But part of being a good author is doing research. If you're going to write a story, even a tiny one, about oh, say, Loki and traditions of mistletoe, how about doing a quick Gooogle search for, um, maybe
Loki and mistletoe?
Sure to get a lump of coal for this,
Spider Scrooge
