Occupy Boston has been rather quiet of late. They've been doing a march here and there, and there are still working group meetings and GAs a few times a week. This kind of stuff doesn't get anywhere near as much press as the Oakland port closings and the other headline-grabbing Occupy actions around the country.
However, OB has not abandoned the core missions of the movement. Our primary public goal is to raise awareness of the economic, political and ethical corruption of this country's most rich and powerful citizens -- a goal, I remind you, that has been overwhelmingly successful. But our other goal is to create the reality we wish to see in the world. We feed, clothe and house those in need; we endeavor to implement a collective decision-making structure that makes sure every voice is heard; and we strive to provide a sense of community, mutual responsibility and human dignity to the marginalized and disenfranchised.
To a Witch like myself, this is a magic working. Naming calls; so does action.
Create reality, change the world.
On the evening of December 20, 2011, the Occupy Boston General Assembly passed a
Resolution of Mutual Aid.
Partial quote: ...we, as the OB family, set aside [funds] from the general fund for members of the OB family who are facing hard times with limited-to-no income...
This is what I'm talking about. The funds proposed will cover anything from underwear to cell phone bills, depending on the need of the person. Recipients will self-identify but be vouched for by two other members of the community to ensure fairness and transparency in the distribution of funds.
Y'all know I'm a devotee of neither Yahweh nor Yeshua bar Yehosef, but you also know that in my opinion the Abrahamic Bible has had 5000 years to refine some of the most beautiful spiritual poetry in the world. (My reading of the Koran and Eastern spiritual texts has unfortunately not been extensive enough to bring quotes to the front of my brain.) So, I hope Christians of my acquaintance will please forgive me when I point out that those in power who are giving Christianity a bad name seem to have skipped over certain verses such as
Matthew 25:35-40 35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:
36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.
37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?
38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?
39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?
40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
