And get 'em he did. There is no doubt after last night that Spider-Man 3 will break all kinds of box office records for an openning weekend. If you can pack 3 large theaters (that's right, I said not one, not two, not four, five is right out, but 3) in Astoria Queens at Midnight on a thursday, I can only imagine what it was like elsewhere in not only the city, but the rest of the country. Here is a quick review and I will try to keep out all spoilers. As far as the movie is concerned, off the bat I will rate it as better than the first, but not as good as the second, which is still pretty good (kind of like compairing the Blue Man Group to Mumenchance). The effects and action in the movie are intensely awesome, as would be expected with the budget involved. I could have done with less of the lovey stuff (which means they also could have done without Gwen Stacey) but then there were other plot points minorly effected by that stuff, so it would have been completely off (much like an eccological system that suddenly loses it's algee). On the subject of Gwen, Blyse (Blise? Blase?) Dallas Howard, whom I don't find that attractive (her too-close-together eyes make her look like a retard) look REALLY hot, except when the camera caught her face on, then I got sudden reminders of retardation. The acting from James Franco was great since he was actually given a chance to so some real work with Harry's character through the course of the entire movie. It was also obvious that Sandman is Raimi's favorite Spidey villain and he did not know very much about Venom (my favorite Spidey villain). Everything about Venom was pretty awesomely perfect (I didn't mind Eddie Brock not being twice Peter Parkers age but the dopple-ganger aspect was spot on). There were only two points I really missed. Not once does Venom refer to himself as a plural and he never tells Spider-Man that he wants to eat his brains. Granted they probably pulled the "brains" thing early on in development since they couldn't even get away with the Venom action figure saying it back in the 90's. Raimi was also still in his fantastic form and his style was quite apparent in many key scenes (not discussed to avoid spoiling). According to Dave, at the premiere they made mention of a 4 being a definate possibility if they can develop a good enough script (everyone who is important to the franchise said they'd be on board). Over-all I left that movie like I left the two before it as well as after I put down every Spider-Man comic I read as a kid. Why can't super powers be real, and why can't I have one, or some?
I woke up this morning pretty tired having not actually gotten to sleep until 3:45, but it was totally worth it. Thankfully there is a Dunkin Donuts right at the subway station by my apartment.
They showed a preview last night for "Across the Universe", the movie musical featuring Beatles songs all set to a story that (from the previews) seems remarkably similar to a combination of "Hair" and "Rent". On one hand it'd be interesting to see how someone interpreted all these songs into a flowing story. Also some of the stuff in there looks pretty trippy, which means it might be worth a stoned-off-my-ass viewing. I also am glad that someone is taking the initiative to introduce the music of the Beatles to a new generation of kids who seemed to be inundated with crappier and crappier music. However, the music from the movie they play in the trailers is unimpressive at best, and with the sotry I've seen before, I am more concerned about this new generation being expossed to a basterdised Beatles, as apposed to the proper music. But maybe it will just spark an interest and get people to buy the real albums. The Beatles lacking on iTunes will not help matters either. I mean this morning I was listening to "We Can Work It Out" and the twang was perfect and it just made me pine for a better time in music, one in which I couldn't even experience first hand.
And then their's my going "back to school" even if it is only for a "semester" and I am more just taking classes, not actually enrolled as a student earning credits. But whatever the case may be, I am feeling so great about it. It is a light at the end of the current tunnel my life has seemed to be stuck in for the past few years of unsatisfactory work situation. This is also making me a little bit more "in your face" with the people here at work. Not so terrible, people seem to like it, and the people who I care for them to know, know the reason for my sudden "brass" behavior. Ever since announcing that I will be getting my portfolio together, people have been throwing jobs at me left and right (obviously only ones I can apply for once I have my shit together) whih is really exciting. It's like I don't have to worry about not finding one, just which one to take. It would be cool to go free lance, but it's not something I should jump into right off the bat without having a real job to support me until I can establish myself as someone to hire "without question". At which point I can apply to the union and make my own hours. Oh that'd be the dream.
Ok, well I am all alone here for now, so I better get on top of this work...oh wait, it's lunch time.
Rockin'!
Oh, and Pete, Spell check is for people who are insecure in their spelling disabilities. I flaunt mine proudly, because frankly, at this point, it's saddly funny.
