Jake was enjoying the attention he was getting. Even if most of it was just girls wanting to know what his cousin was like and the boys wanting to see just how strong he was. The answer to that was of course 'very very strong ( Read more... )

May entered the class room, more engrossed in checking over her homework than anything else that might have been going on. She settled into her usual chair near-ish the back, spreading her text book out and still going over her homework. She knew that if she didn't have this absolutely perfect, her parents would start hinting that she should cut back on being Spider-Girl and focus more on school.

She didn't even notice the new boy in the back.

Jake noticed the girl that sat down only a few chairs away from him. He mostly noticed her, because she was the first kid that hadn't stared at him. Sure it was because she had her nose in a book, but still, good sign.

May felt a tingling on the back of her neck -- not the Spider-Sense tingling, but that 'Someone's watching me' kind of way. She raised her head, looking around and saw Jake Grimm in the back. She raised her hand in a little 'Hi' kind of wave and returned to her homework.

She wanted to go over and talk to him, but that might be kind of awkward. Sure, she knew Jake... as Spider-Girl. May Parker was a complete stranger to him.

Jake wanted to wave back at her, but she'd already turned away before he had a chance to do so. The teacher entered the room and started about a play the class had been working on. Something by Shakespeare. Jake knew he was out of his depth.

May half-listened to the teacher, passing up her homework when it was called for. King Lear wouldn't have been her own first choice for working on in class, but at least she could say they were doing something different. No Romeo and Juliet, no Hamlet, or Othello. May was just fine with that.

The teacher started talking about the true meaning of the plot. About characters called Cordelia and an old king who felt rather stupid from what Jake could make out of it all.

He finally raised his hand.
When the teacher finally turned to him, about two minutes later she seemed a bit annoyed to be interrupted.
"I don't have a copy of that play yet miss Hutchinson."

Miss Hutchinson sighed the weary sigh of a teacher who had suddenly found herself stuck with dozens of new students who were completely behind in the class. "Does anyone want to share with Jake?" She asked.

May's hand shot up, and Miss Hutchinson gave the nod of approval, and May moved into the seat next to Jake. "Hi, I'm May."

"Hi, I'm Jake. Sorry for this, but... well, my last 'teacher' " and the airquotes were clear in his voice "didn't really bother with Shakespeare where english was concerned."

"That's cool." May spread the text book out so Jay could see it. "If you need any help catching up, I'd be happy to help," she said, flicking to the start of the play.

"Thanks you're a lifesaver." Jake tried not to sit too close while still able to read the book. For some reason people tended to get worried when a big pile of bricks was looming over them. He couldn't figure why.

May smiled a little at Jake. "You want the readers digest version?" she asked.

"Okay," May rested her elbows on the desk, her chin on her hand. "So this old guy, Lear, is the king of all England, and he's got three daughters. One day, he decides he's gonna retire and give them the kingdom, with the biggest bit going to the daughter who loves him most. The two older ones lay it on real thick, but the youngest, Cordelia, is 'I love you, isn't that enough?' So Lear disinherits her, and she marries the king of France. Then one of Lear's followers points out that this is really heinous behavior, and HE gets exiled for it, but disguises himself and sticks close to Lear cause he likes the guy.

"Lear's older two daughters are supposed to support Lear and his knights, but they've decided that he isn't getting squat, and Lear ends up poor and wandering around with just the guy he banished and a crazy guy.

"Meanwhile, this guy Edmund is the bastard son of and earl, and he gets his older brother disinherited. Right now where's here..." she flipped the pages. "Lear's raging against the heavens."

"So where's uh what's her name, Cordelia in all this? I guess she just gives up on her dad then as well?"

"She's off in France. I read ahead a little, and soon the French invade. Maybe she's coming to her dad's rescue, maybe she's just taking what she thinks should be hers."

"I can't blame her. I guess I'm lucky that all my dad wants to see himself as appreciated is that I don't drink milk from the carton."
