so im stuck in xela (quetzaltenango). not that i planned to leave, its just kind of exciting news that i cant. apparently all the major roads are blocked in the country due to protests against taxes and so the buses arent running today possibly tomorrow, too. kinda ruined my day trip plans to go to one of the nearby villages and go to the garment market. i need a scarf dammit. its cold here. no need to be jealous of CA weather. it is cold and rainy and your need a sweater after around 4. i hope belize is sunny cause i still want to go camping with meghan and the howler monkeys (although i recently heard a horror story from australia about how they throw their shit at you if you make them mad).
xela is really nice, and im happier to be stuck here than pana or san pedro. its a really beautiful interesting city with one of the prettiest parks ive been to, and the hostel im staying in is really fun. at first i was a little sketched out by it. you see, im staying in this warehouse sized room with nothing but mattresses on the floor, and you can barely walk because there are no real aisles or rows and peoples stuff is everywhere, and the bathroom kind of smells like my preschool, but its super fun. its only 20 quetzales a night and its like a non stop slumber party in there, and when we lost power last night we all played cards with flashlights. i felt 12 flopping around in pj pants on all the beds eating popcorn and being loud and then we watched movies when the power came back. oh holiday. BULLSHIT! i love cards.
theres also a nice balcony outside of the dorm room with benches and candles and you can see all over the city which is nice. i stayed up until 3 am talking to australia (when i went out for pizza with a bunch of folks in the hostel (there were like 10 of us) instead of learning everyones name, we just started calling eachother denmark or korea or canada. kinda offensive i guess, but fun.) Anyway, australia and i were talking, and he spent the past couple of months in mexico and had even crazier stories to tell than i do, like getting bitten by a rabid dog in mexico city, and having his entire backpack stolen in xela. yikes.
im reading pilgrim at tinker creek now, which is kind of weird, but seemed like the best and cheapest choice at the book exchange.
less than 20 days left. i guess when it hits 2 weeks ill start counting. i cant believe its time to come home.
