This was already addressed with the Invisible Man in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (the comic, not the movie). The idiots originally thought they were being visited by the Holy Spirit, then Mina Harker (who's not a vampire in the comics) tosses some white paint over the Invisible Man and they capture him.
