A friend at work has a daughter that is having trouble in English. She was given an assignment to re-write the famous balcony scene from Romeo & Juliet, but it had to be in a modern setting with modern dialog. She was panicing cause she could not understand any Shakespeare, but the project sounded fun to me, so I told her I'd help. Helping evolved into me basically doing the whole thing. lol. I just finished, and thought I'd share.
(exterior - an Old Navy store front. Romeo, a Montague High student, wanders by)
ROMEO:
Whoa... who is that in the window? Is it that girl from Capulet High? Juliet... She is gorgeous... way better looking than the clerks at The Gap.
*he walks into the store, staying close to the far wall*
It IS her! I should go talk to her, after she finishes with that woman she's talking to. Oh, I wish I could talk to her that easily... But I know I would choke, standing so close, and looking into those eyes. I've never seen anything like them, they're so bright they put to shame any star I've ever seen. She's showing her customer how soft the gloves are by rubbing them on her face... Oh, to touch that face... that is the luickiest glove in the world.
*customer leaves. Juliet looks at her watch, she still has two hours till closing time*
JULIET:
*sigh* Oh man...
ROMEO:
Oh say something else please, you voice floats like it has wings...
JULIET:
Oh Romeo, Romeo... Why can't you just forget your friends and transfer schools? But if you don't want to, just say you love me and I'll leave my school! That's all that's keeps us apart, a school!! And why should our schools matter? You're not on the football team, or or the track team, or any other team a school has, and niether am I. WE don't compete, so why then does everyone say we can't date someone from a rival school? If you went to a differant school you'd still be as sweet.
*Romeo slowly walks up from behind her*
ROMEO:
Call me your love and I'll start home-schooling if I have to.
JULIET:
*smirking* Who are you to listen in on a girl's private ramblings?
ROMEO:
Just a guy who hates his school as much as you do.
JULIET:
How'd you get here? It's a long drive and gas is expensive. And by the way, if anyone from school comes by, you're gonna get beat.
ROMEO:
I have a small car that gets great milage. It's fast too though, so I can outrun anyone that tries to catch me.
JULIET:
Still, I wouldn't want to be you if they caught up.
ROMEO:
That's fine. I'd rather have them beat me to death than to live without you.
*Romeo blushes, having said too much*
JULIET:
So, how'd you know I work here?
ROMEO:
A friend told me I should come check out this mall, he said the drive would be worth the merchandise. I guess he knew I liked you.
JULIET:
Romeo, do you love me? If you say 'yes' I'll trust you. But you might just be saying it to get a kiss...
*Juliet smirks again*
ROMEO:
I swear by the moon that I love you.
JULIET:
Don't swear by the moon, it changes too much. If you swear on it you might change your mind about loving me.
ROMEO:
What do you want me to swear by then?
JULIET:
Don't swear by anything, or if you do, swear to yourself and I'll beleive you. That's better than any moon to me... But anyway, you should go, I don't get off for a while and my boss will kill me if she catches me talking to people. So goodnight, next time we meet we can get to know each other better.
ROMEO:
What? Is that all I get?
JULIET:
What else do you want?
ROMEO:
For you to say 'I love you' to me.
JULIET:
I said it long before you ever asked. But I'll say it again: I love you as deep and boudless as the ocean. And the more love I give to you, the more I feel loved.
*Juliet's boss calls from the back room, Romeo hides behind a rack of sweaters*
JULIET:
*yells* I'll be there in a second! *whispers* Stay here, I'll be right back.
*Juliet leaves*
ROMEO:
Oh what a night... please don't let all this be a dream.
*Juliet returns*
JULIET:
Three little words Romeo. Then say goodnight. But if you love me enough to run away and get married, tell me tomorrow when I call you. Tell me when and where you want to do it, I'll follow you wherever you take me.
BOSS:
*yells loudly* Juliet!!
JULIET:
*yells back* I'm coming! *whispers* When do you want me to call you?
ROMEO:
At 11:00, that should be lunch for us both.
JULIET:
I won't forget. It's getting late, you should drive back to Montague.
ROMEO:
Sleep well, and know in your heart that I love you with all of mine. But for now, I'm must go. G'night Juliet.
