Okay. I have wanted to write this for a while now, but I think the time is right.
It has been a year and a few days since I left Panera. I had been with the company for about 7 years. I was an associate there for 3.5 and a manager for the same length of time. When I left I had a comfortable job, decent pay, and the predictability of knowing what I will be doing 2, 3, 4 weeks ahead.
Why did you leave? Mainly because I wanted to do something better with my life. I really couldn’t see myself doing this longer than what I anticipated. This was just a step in my career life.
But you had great benefits, alright pay, paid vacations, etc… Yeah but here’s the thing; all of that is cool and all but when you are not happy, no amount of money can change that.
So what did you do? Good thing you asked voice in my head! I went back to school and found a job as a server. I would say it would be the best decision of my life so far.
How so? Well I had always wanted to be in broadcasting, but I never thought it would be an option until I did some soul searching and some researching. I can say I made some friends, memories, and experiences that will last with me forever. I got to meet celebrities, kissed a championship trophy, be on television, and saw how a newscast was run from behind the scenes.
And the serving part? Yeah it was the first place that offered me a job.
So what is this fake interview all about? What are you trying to say? All I am trying to say is, if you don’t like how the status quo is going, change it up! If you like being in a 9-5 job M-F fine, whatever floats your boat. But if you dread going to work every day, do something about it. Don’t complain, DO IT! Only you can change your situation. It can be scary, but in the end it’ll all work out. You will never know what you will experience in the mean time. Like the Joker says in The Dark Knight; “Introduce a little anarchy. Upset the established order…”
Anything else? Nope that’s all. It’s time for me to get off of my soapbox.
