It took Mai a few seconds to place where she'd see the boy before. But the wide, green eyes and messy auburn hair were undeniably familiar and it didn't long for her memory to click.
“Oh, yes. The museum.” She greeted him with a grin. “I remember you.”
“Out for a walk?” He asked cordially. “Or are you working again, Museum-nee-chan?”
“Just finishing up an errand, actually.” Mai told him brightly. “I was about to head home.”
“Thats good. This neighborhood can get a bit strange after dark.”
It was an odd statement coming from such a young boy and, feeling distinctly off, Mai blinked, glancing towards their surroundings.
“Were you...” She chose her words carefully. “Out by yourself again?”
“I like taking walks.” His shoulders shrugged casually. “But, I was about to head home as well.”
Interrupted by the rumble of the approaching bus, Mai paused, hurrying to stand in place. Only to pause again at the realization that she hadn't been followed.
“...You're not taking the bus?”
“I live nearby.” He gave the stopping bus a look akin to disgust. “And I don't really like buses in anycase.”
“Oh...” Turning hesitantly at the hydraulic swish of the door, Mai climbed slowly up steps, uncomfortable at the thought of leaving him on his own in the dark. She turned. “If you change your mind, there's a big house just down the road. They're really nice so I'm sure they'd let you call home for a ride if you asked.”
“Is that so?” He gave Mai a wide, curling smile just as the bus's doors began to close. “I'm sure you're right, Nee-chan. I do work there as the detective, after all.”

Hands linked behind his back, Loki made his way towards the bookshelves, scanning over the titles as he spoke. “So Yamino-kun? How did you find our guest? Pleasant?”
“Well, yes, she seemed rather nice. And interested in our work...” Yamino paused thoughtfully before straightening abruptly. His voice soft. “Jaiki?”
“No. Nothing like that.”
“Ah, good.” Yamino sighed. “I was worried I might have missed something important.”
“I suppose that would depend on what you deemed important.” Loki chuckled. Reaching out to slip a book off the shelf, he trailed a finger over a well worn spine, “There was nothing malicious attached to her aura, no. But there was certainly something there...”
The thoughtful silence held just long enough for Yamino to fidget curiously at his father's behavior.
Then.
“Ah, well. I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually.” Setting the quandary aside for a later date, Loki grinned cheerfully. Patting his faithful shikigami, he turned back around to face Yamino. “More importantly... Is supper ready yet? All this walking has made me hungry.”
“Of course!” Straightening up eagerly, Yamino adjusted his glasses with a bright grin. “It's just warming in the oven. Shall I bring it up for you or would you like to have it in the dining room?”
“The dining room's fine.” Giving a small private smile of amusement at Yamino's excitement, Loki sauntered towards the office door.
“Oh, though if I might ask... how was your walk this evening, Loki-sama?”
“Productive.”
“Productive?” Yamino repeated the word quizzically.
“Productive.” Loki nodded firmly. Slipping a hand into his coat pocket, he withdrew a small piece of paper with a slow grin. “You might even say that I've stumbled upon a 'fushigi mystery'.”
