Word Count: 409
Author's Note: Something that occurred to me while working on my Yuletide. (Guess I can post it without guilt of giving away my assignment now that everything's been revealed. XD) Not a part of my other bit of GH / MLR fun.

It was small, fluffy, and... pink.

It was for these reasons alone that Masako bit her tongue, swallowing down a shriek of surprise as she spotted the distinctly inhuman spirit floating in the courtyard. Her kimono sleeve pressing tightly against closed lips, she froze in place and watched the creature with a wide eyed, stare.

Certainly, it didn't look like any of the spirits she had seen before - benign or otherwise. But, Masako had long learned that it was unwise to judge things by what they appeared to be.

Then, ever so slowly, it turned. Long, rabbit-like ears flopping as it floated cheerfully in a circle, large red eyes crinkled with glee and its mouth stretched in what could almost be called a grin.

"Puyaaaan~"

"Pu-?" Masako's mouth opened and closed, her voice dropping to a strained whisper. "It said 'puyan'?"

What was that? What did it mean?

"Ecchan has a bit of trouble pronouncing anything else," came the dry explanation from behind the frozen medium. "Not that I mind, it's pretty darn cute, if I do say so myself."

Masako whirled.

"Of course, you don't have to content yourself with looking, Psychic-san." A little boy gave her a wide grin, green eyes luminous as he smiled cheerfully at her. "I'm sure Ecchan wouldn't mind being pet if you asked politely."

"Ecchan?" Her eyes darted from the boy to the floating thing and back again, watching uneasily as the pink creature gave a delighted squeal at the appearance of it's companion and quickly came to drift next to the young boy.

He nodded. "You can see them, can't you? Spirits, I mean."

"I can." She retorted, straightening up proudly. "But, that is not any sort of spirit I've seen before."

The boy gave a wide curling grin. Chuckling softly, he beckoned the creature closer. Moving to give it an affectionate rub behind its long, floppy ears, he watched her reaction carefully from the corner of his eye.

"Of course not, Ecchan is much more special than any old regular spirit.. After all, I'm the one who made her."

"Made?" The word popped out before Masako could help herself; and, for the first time, she looked, really looked, at the boy. And paled. Senses reeling, she wobbled. A sharp, feminine gasp passed her lips. “You're...”

Rolling his shoulders in a casual shrug, his eyes twinkled with mirth at the young woman.

"Every God needs a familiar or two."
