“And, now that the water's boiling, you can add it to the teapot.” Suzuya instructed. A wry smile on his lips as he watched Tsukiko hurry to do so, flustered despite her best efforts. Only a combination of his promise to help her learn to brew tea properly and sheer determination kept Suzuya from moving to help her. “Carefully. You only want to fill it about three cups worth. Make sure you have the strainer secure or it'll fall into the pot.”

“What? How do I-” Too late. “Oh no!”

Then, adding injury to insult, before Suzuya had gotten a chance to explain how to get the fallen tea strainer back out the girl had dove forward to to fish it out on her own. With her bare fingers.

“Wait! Tsukiko it's-”

She immediately gasped in pain, shoving the stinging digits in her mouth with a muffled whimper.

“-hot.” He finished lamely, thrusting aside his role as teacher with a worried frown as he stepped forward to take control of the situation. Skillfully putting the tea pot to rights with one hand, tea leaves settled and steeping as they should, he saw to Tsukiko with the other, touching her wrist gently. “Are you alright? Here. Let me see.”

Still sucking softly on her wounded fingers, she pulled away. Her voice lowered to little more than a pout at her slip up. “...'m fin...”

He gave a sigh, charmed despite himself. “You're not fine if it hurts so badly you won't let me see it.”

She relinquished sullenly.

“Hmm...” Gently taking hold of her hand, Suzuya took a look at her reddened fingers. “It doesn't look too bad.”

“I told you it was fine.” Tsukiko repeated, then sighed. “...Kanata's going to tease me for not even being able to boil water now.”

Oh yes, Kanata would. Suzuya bit down a chuckle before reassuring her. “I'll never tell. You may want to put some salve on them though. Maybe Hoshizuki-sensei would-”

“No.” She cut him off just a tad too quickly. Her voice hitting a note of embarrassed panic that was entirely different from the friendly exasperation she'd had at the thought of Kanata finding out about her mistake. Pulling her hand hastily back from Susuzya's grasp, Tsukiko glanced away. “I mean, I can put lotion on them when I go back to my dorm. It's no big deal. Really.”

Her cheeks were red. And suddenly, for the life of him, he couldn't remember just when they'd gotten that way.

“Can we finish the lesson first?” She looked up at him pleadingly. “Please?”

He hesitated slightly before nodding.

“Alright.” She smiled brilliantly, and Suzuya stared a moment longer before returning the expression awkwardly. A strained laugh on his lips. “After all, what kind of Okkan would I be if I didn't teach you how to make a good cup of tea?”
