Rating: PG
Word Count: 269
Author's Notes: Fits somewhere vaguely Good End-y or After Autumn-y as to why Hoshizuki waits so long to marry Tsukiko.

On the bad days, he's sure that he'll come home to find that she's left him. She's young, pretty, caring, with her whole life spread out in front of her. While Kotarou, himself, for lack of a better description, is none of these things.

There are better people, more worthy people, more capable people, willing and waiting to care for her the moment things fall apart. - Kotarou hasn't missed the way others look at her. - And he's resigned himself to the fact that it's only a matter of time before she realizes she's better off with someone else.

He comes home instead to her packing away the suitcases. Her face dusty and flush with victory from her long and messy battle reclaiming territory within the confines of their shared closet space. Her smile upon seeing him return is just as brilliant and blissful as it was the day they first moved in together.

“Welcome home, Kotarou-san.” Tsukiko takes his shoes and coat without missing a beat, tucking them away neatly where he would have simply left them to lie wherever they fell. “How was work? Are you hungry? I was just about ready to start dinner. Would you like-”

He interrupts her mid-sentence, kissing her first on the tip of her dust-smudged nose, before picking her up and kissing her again. Properly this time. The seemingly relentless pressure in his chest lessening at the way she still flushes with embarrassment at the first hint of intimacy.

A kick and a nudge locks the front door behind him as he smiles softly back at her.

“I'm home, Tsukiko.”
